re: The Home Theater thread

^^ There are lot of customisation and tuning options which let you set up a custom built HT in a professional manner. Also, one must carefully look at the specs of each and every component before putting them together. As obviously the results will be better than a HTiB and you can just expand it the way you want. All this matters if you are a person sensitive to audio. For a person who is not very choosy about sound, a normal HTiB will suit the best. Also, there is not much research, build time etc required for a HTiB.

I do own a HTiB and if there was a single reason I brought it that was because it had seamless connectivity with my TV. Apart from that, SQ wise, it does not impress me, given I am very sensitive to music and I want music in the way I prefer. There is not even a damn equaliser in my HT(Sony HT).

Performance wise it is okayish and movies are well sounding, not music. Definitely ages behind an Onkyo or a Yamaha setup.

Denon AVR - Not sure if the dealer has switched the receiver

Requests the mods not to delete this thread at least for 2 days until I sort out my issue

Picked up a Denon AVR 1713 last night from a local reseller.
The HDMI Video out never worked , tried everything but to no avail.

Then I noticed that the Serial numbers on the AVR and the Box are different.
As per Denon site they should be the same.

SR on Back panel of the AVR
2056610327

SR on Outer cardboard Box
2096620472

Can this happen ? Would appreciate a quick response as I am meeting the dealer later today.

Will post the images shortly

No it shouldn't happen. Serial number of the device should match with the carton. Something fishy.

Shouldn't be the case, who is this dealer in Bangalore ? Maybe you should put this up on hifivision.com and other audio forums too. Most dealers are registered members on the audio forums too.

Re: Denon AVR - Not sure if the dealer has switched the receiver

Sounds like Pro Fx. They sold a colleague a used Pioneer VSX-922-K (Pro Fx are now selling Pioneer too) at full price. Its only when my colleague looked at some unpacking videos on you tube did he notice things out of place in the carton and on the unit itself. Pro Fx replaced the unit. I still call it unprofessional for a company that claims to be the most professional in the business. Most folks won't look at the finer details of a product and just accept what comes in the box.

Re: Denon AVR - Not sure if the dealer has switched the receiver

Could be a display piece being dispatched in the wrong box, with the other display piece having gone in a wrong box earlier or still being at the showroom.

The two numbers should match.

Worse - it could be a refurbished unit. - Are the unit warranty seals intact? - What about the manufacturing date on the unit and the Box. Odd that they did not remove / spoil the label from the Box though.

It is not Pro-Fx. Picked this one up from JP Nagar.

For now dealer claims he got a sealed piece and delivered it to me. He has called the warehouse or whoever his supplier is and asked for a replacement.

Need to see where this goes.

Music Ranch?

Denon comes only through Pro Fx. There is no other distributor for it.

If it was a sealed piece, this can't happen. Anyway; if they are replacing it, well and good.

KEI is also a denon distributor. It is no longer a ProFX monopoly. Most end resellers buy it from KEI as their prices are a bit lower.

The dealer could be telling the truth, I have had a similar experience where the phone I bought was a sealed piece with the hologram intact. The phone was actually used, the free memory card was missing and the inbox had messages from 3 months before. It was a good job at physical refab I must admit.

A visit to the store with a lawyer friend sorted out the issue real quick and a brand new replacement was provided.

Back from the dealer.

He replaced the AVR with a new piece, this time the Serial numbers match.
Everything works fine on the new system.

The reseller claimed that this is the first time any such thing happened, he is not sure who switched the receiver.

Thanks everyone for responding to this thread.

Will later put a post on my entire setup.

Are you sure you expect it to work how it actually works?

Reason i ask is because i read this 2 days back :

Quote:
....We recently bought our first "true" modern A/V receiver at home. 8 HDMI inputs, multizone amplifier, yadda yadda yadda. The sadly interesting "feature" is that, deep inside, it's designed like an analog system, with digital bits bolted haphazardly on top of it.

The first striking example of that misfeature is that even though it's got a total of 12 video inputs in the rear, only 7 of them can be used directly. Why? Because the receiver has 7 rear analog audio inputs, onto which the video inputs can be virtually "attached", and it's not possible to use a video input that's not attached to an analog audio input without going into the menu and reconfiguring the mapping. Since there are more video inputs than audio input, some video inputs need to remain unattached. Like the video inputs, the digital audio inputs are overrides of analog inputs, so they need to be similarly mapped. For extra fun, not all 7 rear HDMI inputs have the same capabilities, only 4 of them are full-featured.....

Please share information about your seller. Seems the helpful kind. Folks like these deserve your business over the one's who do not care or are least supportive.
