Compact flash seems to be the most rugged while SD seems to be most accepted small format card. so it is really between these 2.

Compact flash is rugged and cheap to buy.

One word of warning. Do get a branded card. A friend bought some cheap compact flash from ebay. It had an unusual brand name. It worked ok in his camera for a few weeks but then stopped working. Since then he has bought a few Lexar branded CF cards which have worked fine for more than 2 years.

Devarshi

If you're planning to buy a card for your phone you dont have much of a choice - you'll have to buy whatever card the phone accepts, and I am yet to come across a phone that offers you multiple options for additional memory.

On the other hand, if this is a question not related to a specific device I would suggest that you go for the memory card that is compatible with all or at least most of your other appliances (Phone, Comp, Digital Camera, PDA, Car Stereo, Personal MP3 player like iPoDs, etc)...it will make your life a lot less complex. This policy works well for me - my iMate, Laptop, Digital Camera and my flash memory card all use SD...makes exchanging data between these a snap.

Beware of the Memory Stick - you'll be stuck with Sony appliances and they're more expensive than comparable SD cards. Between SD and MMC there isnt much of a diff.

Well as of now I have A sony handycam that uses the first gen memorystick.

But then I have mostly sony appliances in my house(TV, mini hi-fi etc)

My compaq R4000 notebook pc has a card reader so that's not much of a hassle.

BUt I want to use the same Memory card for all my devices and hence such a question.

I have various option for buying a mobile phone so deciding on the memory card is mroe important.

I am of this illusion that SD cards are the widest accepted format. Am i correct??
