Amazon Kindle

The thread seems to have stopped abruptly, since the last update Amazon has released Kindle 3 and it supposed to better and now lot cheaper - $139 for wifi only & $189 for 3G version. I've asked a friend to pick one for me from the US - they seem to have sold out currently and available for pre-order only. The graphite version looks awesome and i can't wait to play with it.

You can also look at BNM's reader Nook. Thats the one which triggered the price collapse.

The new Kindle looks really good. It is smaller & lighter than nook, and will ship internationally to India. Even India is covered under their wireless coverage, one can download via GPRS Edge too.

Whispersync is compelling to stay with Kindle and not look other options. Kindle also has limited browsing capabilities that sometimes could be useful.

We have to remember that Kindle is 3rd generation now. Amazon.com always used to get the technology right, and still does. My first ever online purchase was with Amazon.com, in 1996 using an earlier account which I lost when I changed ISP. I just checked my purchase history in Amazon.com, I have been buying since 1998 with my current account, all the records are still available for instant viewing. And I have the technology background to understand that it is an enormous engineering feat. Meanwhile, HDFC Bank netbanking is unable to show any record older than 6 months or so. That should give you some idea. I have been purchasing from them even after moving to India 6+ years back.

I like B&N too, but only as a brick & mortar shop, where I used while away hours looking at books. They always played catch up with Amazon.com when comes to technology.

Considering my 100% customer satisfaction with Amazon.com as an online customer for 14 years, Kindle is the only sensible choice for me.

The 3rd generation Kindle 6 inch WiFi version seems to be an amazing VFM offer with 139$ only. Planning to get one.

I am severely limited by physical constraints. I had earmarked one room for books and study only. Now that seems to be overflowing on all fronts. This is more a need for me than mere a toy!

I am all set for purchasing Kindle. But the only question is, with or without 3G. I don't understand the free 3G business as applicable to India. If I get the 3G version, how will it work in India? Do I have to get a 3G connection in India? Will the 3G download be free?

I guess I will go with the non 3G version.

Same here. Should be getting by this weekend.
I felt I can live without 3G on Kindle. The WiFi version is good enough.

For 3G they have tied with Local carriers. Currently it downloads through the regular GPRS.

Is the customes duties etc collected alongwith the price by amazon?

Does the 3G one has the Wifi Too ?

There's no other 3G in India except BSNL, so going for a wifi version would be more sensible considering the rates at BSNL is operating however if the 3G version has wifi too, then its a future ready purchase.

I am assuming the '3g' on kindle is on top of regular GPRS. Do you really need 3g to download some ebooks? does it matter if you get a book in 90 seconds or 300 seconds after purchase?

IMHO what you should be looking at is whether amazon has a tie up with any service provider at all, 3g or not.

I took the WiFi only version. And yes you can order only at Amazon.
(I think it does not sell as catalogue).

The 3G also supports regular GPRS. Amazon has worked out with Carriers and all of them support it (I mean in India). Few of friends have the DX and it works. But they said the speed was low.

That's the best version to go for, I don't think it's worthwhile spending the extra dough on the 3G version. Specially if you look at it's core competency as being just a book reader, and not a web browser / app container.
