Quite honest and to the point. A good guide for the fence sitters...

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

My M4i died in the Chennai flood.

Should I just get an... M4i? Especially as I have nice flip cover for it and like everything about the phone except the small no-sd-card storage space, and it is good value for money?

Or, should I rejoin the Moto camp with the Moto G Turbo, or even the Moto X play. Frankly, 5" is big enough for me.

Thoughts?

If nothing else get the MI4!! Its camera is superb (my sister takes crystal clear photos of her toddler daughter) and its a proper flagship experience.

Before you buy the 1+, check its camera just to be sure. the 1+1 had a terrible camera.

If I remember rightly, Mi4 does not support LTE band 40 therefore on airtel you won't get 4G currently.

Whatever happened to the Mi4C? It's supposed to be physically same as Mi4 and Mi4i but with the latest Snapdragon 808 chipset.

The OnePlus X should be on your list. It's a fantastic device for the price.

The Moto G turbo is a good VFM phone but with Flipkart offers, the Moto X play is a steal currently. Battery life, camera and performance are very good for the price.

The cameras on the Xiaomis are a lot better than the Motos.
The battle is basically between stock android vs MIUI. If you liked MIUI, then Mi4/4i should be the pick unless you really want the expandable storage of Moto.

Funnily enough I don't! I use a different launcher. The think I do like is relative ease of rooting, etc.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I rooted my Android 4.0.4.

While reading up on what to do next, I found this step:

Rename install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.bak

How to do this ?

The tutorials say that if I dont do this, then phone will go back into regular ROM. Does this mean that after reboot I will no longer be root ?
If it boots back with stock ROM, will it give any message / indication of this ?

The idea of rooting was to move apps to the SD card. I am trying to use Link2SD.

So if the phone goes back to the stock ROM, does it mean that Link2SD / App2SD etc will not work ? Or will the apps that I have linked / moved - will these not work ?

the confusion is there also because I have restarted the phone, and I get a message that Link2SD & App2SD have been granted priviliges.

( The SU "app" - the one with 'S' ikon - is still there)

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Use either a terminal app or something like a root-compatible file manager.

I think ES File manager will do, or even yaffs explorer are good enough.

Can you post the link for the tutorial? That will help us understand the context better.

Proceed below only if you want to have a permanent Clockworkmod recovery

1. ..
2. ..
3. Rename install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.bak and perform the steps numbered 6 to 12 once again. You don't need to pull out the battery this time during the reboot, as the stock recovery won't be able to replace the clockworkmod recovery on its own.

You can do this only if you have attained superuser permissions by following the steps numbered 1-19. Open Root Explorer or any other file manager that can handle root permissions and go to the folder /etc, a file named install-recovery.sh should be present there.
I use ES Explorer as a file manager, as soon as you flash clockwork mod and the phone boots, open ES explorer, press the hamburger menu (3 horizontal lines in the top left corner), scroll down and tick yes to root explorer. That gives you the ability to change files in /etc folders.

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-screenshot_20151223074822.png

Navigate to / then etc folder, there will be a file called install_recovery.sh. Select the file, press 3 dots on the top right and select Rename. Just add .bak to the end of the file and you're done!

If you don't do this step, the recovery will be reverted back to stock recovery but the ROM will remain the same what you've flashed, you wont lose root access. Its just that flashing another ROM or Zip file will require you to do all the steps mentioned above to install CWM recovery.

This issue is present in all phones. I usually flash a custom ROM with the script for installing stock recovery disabled as soon as the phone boots into recovery so that I don't have to do the step you mentioned.

Hope this helped!

The Mi4i is terrific VFM.

The Mi4i and the Moto Turbo have extremely similar specs.
Advantage Mi4i: Full HD (vs HD), better Camera
Advantage Moto turbo: Faster response, SD card slot (lot of advantage when Android M comes as an update)

The OnePlus X beats both phones hand down.

If you like the mi4i, I would recommend the 32 GB version.
