Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

OnePlus users rejoice.

OnePlus has launched OnePlus care in India.

There is a 1 year extended warranty on all phones after OP 6T.

Phones from OnePlus One to OnePlus 6 can get their battery replaced for just Rs.600 as part of the BatterySecure program, valid for 1 year.

You have to install the OnePlusCare app and activate the above benefits.

Online search shows

m30s = 188 grams
Honor 8 Pro = 184 grams

Unless the phone will be used without a cover (most aren't), add another 20-50 grams depending on the case chosen.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Any idea how Samsung calculates this 48MP resolution of the cameras on the M30S? Picture size wise, I'm only seeing 12MP on the main cam, or am I missing something?

M30S is quite a light phone for it's size and specs. If she is used to Honor 8 Pro, this should be similar. Weight difference is just 4 grams.

Somehow this feels a lot lighter than the specs suggest too, probably due to the form factor. Feels lighter in-hand and pockets than my smaller LG G6.

Pixel gimmickry. This GSMArena article explains the general tech behind it.

Thank you. That pretty much explains it.

The camera has a typical Samsung tendency to overexpose night shots, but the colour reproduction from the main lens seems pretty accurate at night.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

An interesting report on the Camera performance of the Value Flagship - The Redmi K20 Pro - gets a DXOMark score of 102 and breaks into the Top 20 Camera Smartphones Listing at #16.

DXOMark Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro camera review: Link

Quote:
With an overall DXOMARK Camera score of 102, the Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro does not make it into the top ten of our ranking, but achieves a respectable score for a device in its price bracket. The Photo score of 108 is based on a solid performance across all test categories, without any glaring weaknesses.

The Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro’s DXOMARK score of 102 doesn’t get the device a top position in our ranking, but it is still a respectable result for a phone that is less than half the price of many flagships from the competition.

Redmi K20 Pro matches Pixel 3, beats iPhone XR in DxOMark tests: Link

Quote:
The Redmi K20 Pro proved to be a strong contender in DxOMark’s camera tests. With an overall score of 102, it matches the Pixel 3 and is a point ahead of the iPhone XR. Keep in mind that this is a €400 phone, significantly more affordable than either of those.
Another interesting observation is that the Asus Zenfone 6 also has been reviewed and sits at #11. It has been recommended as one of the best smartphones for videography. For reference, the OnePlus 7 Pro is ranked at #5.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

No Pixel 4 twins for India, as their new touch-less gestures utilize banned-in-India radar tech.

GSMArena article.

Another bummer (just in case someone sources it from somewhere else), is the Pixel phones no longer get unlimited 'original quality' cloud storage for photos. It's only 16 megapixel 'high quality' like all other Androids. 'Original quality' option still available for paid storage subscribers.

GSMArena article.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

So, what do you guys think about pixel 4 and 4XL?
My cousin is coming to india from USA and there is $100 amazon gift card deal as a part of pre-order offer. I am more inclined towards the larger pixel because of larger battery.
I currently use iphone 6s Plus and i am willing to switch to android and keep my iphone as a secondary phone (currently i have android as a secondary phone).
only bummer is pixel 4 does not have an ultra-wide camera.
Also iphone 11 is a No for me only because of that LCD or else i would have bought it and iphone 11 pro for 256gb is 1150 + tax which is simply very expensive for me.
I will be cross-posting this post on the iphone thread as well.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Need to buy a basic phone for my 12 year old for calls and WhatsApp only. Should be able to access WiFi too. I must have the ability to restrict all other Internet access including YouTube and browsers (cruel I am!).

Any tips please?

You can block these on your router. I have used K9 and also child protection dns servers in the past. You are doing a good thing but complete protection needs a parent to cover all bases. I still find that with all of this, Google images still does permit porn access, which is frustrating.

If using an android phone for your kid, you can try out Google Family Link and setup the child's phone to monitor and restrict apps (for install as well as usage). The best part is you can setup a viewing schedule with daily usage limits. I have been successful in limiting the screen time of my kid to a certain extent using this and it is working good as of now.

Are you comfortable using android developer tools? One crude way is, uninstall all the pre-installed browsers (shipped by manufacturer), youtube etc. using adb, then uninstall play store too, same method.

With this the only way for him/her is to install apps/browsers is by side-loading it.

I'd say a no to the Pixel 4 line.

-The Soli chip works on 60MHz band, the public usage of which is banned in India by the GoI. So dunno how the legal aspect works.
-The clear-cut camera advantage that Pixel had is no longer the case. Other have caught up.
-Only 6GB RAM? Androids do hog memory.
-Also the battery isn't great with the 90Hz screen (which will consume a LOT of battery).
-Plus there are no headphones in the box, you'll have to buy a type-C one, separately. Also there is no jack for a regular 3.5mm
-And it has no other means of authentication apart from the Face ID for banking etc. apps. I know developers have accommodated the Face ID for iOS, don't know if they'll do the same for an android phone which isn't launching in India
-Pixel 4XL is $899 for 64GB while iPhone 11pro is $999 for the same. iPhone is the clear winner here
If you still just wish to go for android, go for Samsung Galaxy S10+ which is $953 for 128GB even on Amazon US.
PS: Have you tried the LCD on the iPhone 11? It isn't that bad.

If you are okay with not having a face unlock or even a finger print reader, and is ready to go back to the number lock or pattern lock days, then you can get one. But its not the fastest or the most fluid phone out there. Ofcourse Google updates the phones on time, but many other manufacturers also. And most of the new features in Android 10 already exist in Samsung's OneUI since ages. The processor is already half a generation old now with 855+ the new flagship and memory is limited as well.
Also doesn't have a good battery life and also no fast memory reading or rapid charging too.

The only thing it has is a camera! Its basically a camera that you can use to call and text.

I would recommend you check out a Galaxy Note or S series or even a OnePlus 7T Pro. You may even continue with the iOS range as well.

I can be more cruel. How about getting a JioPhone, its basic, cheap, and has whatsapp also. I dont think anyone will browse much on that either.

If you want android, get a basic Nokia Android Go phone. It has limited memory so your child will not be able to install PUBG or Call of Duty.
