re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Given the history of abuse your phones undergo, why don't you take a look at the seemingly indestructible Motorola Defy. I should hopefully be picking it up soon!

Absolutely NO SAMSUNG for me.

Did have a Motorola too, the best batt backup Ive ever seen in all my exp!

Listed a few basic criteria that is required out of the phone

1. Android (Preferably)
2. 3G
3. Easy to type and ability to dial a number should be quick
4. Touch screen or a hybrid with full touch and slide out qwerty key pad

And the contenders are as below

1. HTC Wildfire
2. Samsung Galaxy 551 I5510
3. Nokia C6 (Only symbian contender here)

Look forward to your suggestions here

Thanks
Dell XCD35 should do your job.

The quick dialing ability depends on the default launcher that you have installed or the UI. so select it or just install an aftermarket launcher from the market.

Yes and no. You don't need a screen protector as such. But if you have a key or a pen in your pocket - it may still get a scratch (over time). So you need atleast a pouch style cover.

One question on market apps. When you press install it tells internet connection is required by the app, is it to download or to work?
Its a different setup. Once you get used to it, u wont miss the older OSes.

both. please remember that the 'free' android apps need internet access to show you ads You should root it via superoneclick (samurai posted link on page 220/221) and then install titanium backup as well as AdFree!

@YaeJay: You basically have XCD35,Ace (not recommended for its screen), Defy (if u spend 16k), Wildfire S (again not recomended for its screen) in that price. and mind you Android = bad battery backup. Fact of life. Even the iPhones don't have great battery backup if the net usage is high.

just see any android running on 800x480 and then ask yourself if the 320x480 droids are worth it.

@Sprucegoose: Congrats - we NEED pics!

@ohcvTec - Man you must've done something like forgotten to wipe cache/factory data reset. Let us know exactly what is the issue - or you can post it on xda-developers if you wish for a realtime solution from the actual developers themselves!

and in an android, screen is everything. why take a chance?

Re: Android applications (Apps)

imo is a nice service.

I tried a couple of other ones:
a. OurGroceries - Very useful for those of us who shop for groceries
b. AdFree - blocks most ads.
c. MyLifeOrganized - beta and thus free for now. looks naish.
d. SwiftKey - bit klutzy compared to the GB keyboard but really swift once setup. knows all my words so FUN

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I am on CM7 too, It was a pretty simple affair, took about 15-20 minutes!

So far so good!

I am missing some default apps like mobile hotspot, DLNA ect, I guess I will have to find some third party apps to do the job?

Congrats - like I said its pretty simple

There are apps for all of that - head over to the market. Try this for starters:
Dlna on cm7 - xda-developers
Does Defy support WiFi tethering? - xda-developers
Downloads - android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting

CM7 atleast has USB tethering so u can try that for starters.

Re: Android applications (Apps)

Another epic app - droidwall - needs root. blocked games from accessing the internet. Ads' problem with such applications solved forever

Congrats Sprucegoose; Its the best phone in the world for the time being till evo 3d comes out next week. The half life of these phones has drastically reduced to weeks and days from months and years...

Congrats! Does this include any discounts? I have been reading on the net that the phone might be available for around 30k. Isn't there usually a price gap between what samsung claims is the MRP and what the local dealers sell it for?

Anyways congrats dude. You have bought the 'JOY' of the cell phone world if i can say so!

This is the cheapest I could find. Besides its not officially released yet. After it releases I'm sure the price will drop a bit at the least.

I couldn't wait for the 9th of june for it

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

My Defy has been sharing my pant pocket with my car/house key since April. Not a single scratch so far. I don't feel Gorilla glass needs any further protection.

Congrats! I have no plans to go into nightly builds. I switched to CM7 because I felt it was probably lot faster and stable than Official Eclair or Froyo. I might switch to the next Beta or next stable release from Quarx. But no nightly builds, I don't want to be that bleeding edge or want surprises everyday.
