Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Not sure if someone has posted this before. I have a Samsung Galaxy 5 phone that runs Android 2.1. I want to upgrade the OS Android 2.3. Any pointers do the same? What are the precautions that one needs to take care before doing this?
PS: these questions might be silly for some of the droid gurus here. I am a beginner to the droid world. Help please

To load CM7 can I follow the below steps in the order mentioned (pls do Correct me if i'm wrong)
1. Update the motorola drivers with RSD Lite on the PC and phone
2. Root with SuperOneClick
3. Install backup app and make a backup. Which is better titanium / nandroid backup ?
4. Install recovery. Which is better ClockworkMod / 2ndInit ?
5. Copy CM7 rom to sd card , reboot, unzip and install the rom, reboot.

For steps 2-4, corresponding applications are to be directly downloaded on the android phone memory (sd card) and installed ?
1. Not required
2. Yes
3. Clockworkmod recovery takes a "nandroid" backup i.e system files. You can use it to restore/reinstall the system from scratch, not titanium., Titanium backs up all files including user applications.
4. 2nd init contains CWM
5. Remember to wipe before installing or even after just to be sure.

If you have a bootloop, wipe cache in recovery.

and here are the install steps:

"Starting installation with any original froyo 2.2.2 (rooted)
- Download MotoGinger Teaser v3 and put the unzipped folder in Microsd--->(folder and subfolder) clockworkmod---> backup---> put motoginger-test5 folder

1. wipe via CWM
2. advanced restore (system/only)
3. flash fixed-sbf ----> DOWNLOAD
4. wipe via stock recovery, then reboot."

im already rooted. Do i need to get 2ndint as well? Im totally confused lol :(.
Yes, the instructions are crystal clear.

You need root privileges to install 2nd init. Just install 2nd init, reboot as they are saying.

Then install as they are saying (basically you are installing from a backup) which is quite simple. Though yes, CM7 is simpler. Doubt anyone of us can help u on this though - you'd have to ask questions on that thread only!

I wish it was available off the shelf here in India somewhere. I couldnt find it in any of the retail chains here at Pune. And the local mobile wallah's sell something called as Screenguard. Not sure how it compares with SGP. But I have only read good things about SGP and it did not cost a whole bunch more than screenguard - so I took a chance.

I bought this from ebay.in. However, when I just checked, I was not able to find any product from the seller, hence cannot give direct link. Perhaps the seller is updating his listing at the moment?

Please search for Gadget Shieldz on ebay.in tomorrow.

Edit: What solutions do we have for safeguarding our data on Android based phones. Is there a boot-password or some other mechanism (e.g. encryption) available?

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Fellow SGS2 Owners,

Has anybody tried already (or willing to try ) the new XXKH3 ROM ? Are there any improvements in this one over KG6.

I am running KG6 based Litening ROM v5.0, is it worth the upgrade because I was planning to hang-on to LR v5.0 till "Icecream-Sandwich" comes out.

Any and all reviews are welcome.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Now addicted to Android and decided to add one more phone.
Guess what its a Nexus S !
I got it from US(through a friend), its a T-Mobile Factory unlocked phone with Amoled Display.

Comparing with my LG Optimus One P500 the Nexus S is too plasticky.

Got an update to 2.3.4.

But the screen the response time etc.. are leaps ahead.

Was searching for a AntiVirus and glad that i found ESET for android. Other apps i installed,

Team-Bhp
PhoneLocator
Share Contacts
Traffic Counter
Ustream Broadcaster
Photaf
Juice Defender
Google +
File Expert
Oxford Dictionary
Cam Scanner
iMobile
Sanity
No Root Screenshot (although its not working somehow)
Skype
Winamp
Google Docs
Retro Clock/Date

Same here. I am not trying the XXKH3 unless i really hear there is something different and better. Going to wait till the forums confirm XXKH3 offers something better.

Also not in a real rush to start factory fresh installing everything for XXXKH3.

I have the same set up, KG6, Litening 5 and Ninphetamine Kernel. So far so good that i am going to wait till we get some positive feel on the new XXKH3

@wildon,

You should get your hands on the SGS2. You will feel Nexus S a little or may be more than a little slow.

Hard to argue with that 6k price.

but two things:
1. resistive
2. 600MHz

EDIT: I would say "no"

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Hi all,

After almost a year of comprehending an android phone, I have not found the ideal smartphone. I've followed up the launch of the Xperia mini Pro and it seems decent bang for the buck. Anyone here bought one yet or thinking of one? Let me know the pros and cons. I'm skeptical about android mainly because of the hardware becoming obsolete in a few months after launch.
