Motorola has couple of models. Samsung too, IIRC. Just search some online mobile store - flipkart or ezone or ebay. (Not recommending any over other).

Just matter of getting used to the dialler contacts. Just touch the contacts, reach the contact you want, and pull it to right to call; from right to left for messaging.

Does look that android does not save the groups and group members when you dump the address book to a .vcf file.

Anyways, this thread is wonderful to understand other models and issues, but am not too much into rooting..infact tried and failed, via Samsung Kies, it said cannot upgrade firmware in my phone!!!
Kies is a bit like PC suite. You should ODIN - that talks to the lowleel hardware; and use ROM images downloaded before hand. Samfirmware (registration required) or xdaforum are two sources for links to ROMs.

Flashing a ROM is different from rooting the phone. Kies or ODIN will not allow you to root the phone.

I just keep it simple and stupid No groups, nothing. Just a plain list of 1000+ contacts. But it takes very few taps to dial a number with smart dial and setting up favorites and speed dial for frequently called numbers. Here are some screen shots of how I dial a number quickly.

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-screenshot_2.png

First one shows how phone can be unlocked straight to dialer - slide it down by touching on the dialer icon instead of its center.

Second one shows smart dial (T9). Note that I typed the first few letters of the name assuming T9 input method in the dial pad and I get the contact(s) listed. This is the most used method to find and dial *any* number in your contact list quickly.

Third one is the option to send a contact to the desktop, and then I can dial such number directly from the desktop as seen in fourth screen shot.

With a physical keypad, dialing a number quickly will be as easy or difficult or as it would be from a touch screen.

Let me get to a pc and try..thanks clever..the problem is the call log too..not a single step but scratch and slide to find the caller..but nevertheless the direct dial feature is great..

Why is that I cannot receive the contacts sent by my friends using the 'send business card' option?

My friend use a Nokia phone, for the record.

YES, I literally heard an earful from my friend for having made her to send a contact to my phone an infinite times. No brownies points for guessing that I called her and wrote down the number in piece of paper.

It actually gets stored in received files folder and you need to open the business card received and register the name in your contact..

Painful but it works

Thanks man. I'll try it (if possible) and will let you know the results.

By the way, does the business cards thus received have .vcf extension?

PS: I don't get any notifications even if I wait for sometime, after my friend sends a contact as a business card.

One question though, how are they selling it with a "manufacturer warranty" when the phone hasn't been launched here yet?

Reviews say that it is same as the Xperia Neo but with a downgraded camera. Not sure if they share the same battery though.

PS: Even Flipkart and Letsbuy are just accepting pre-orders, last time I checked
The NeoV is launched in India with price tag of 20125 which is good. On net it may be bought below 20000. It is not available in Mumbai though as many on GSM arena have reported.
Xperia neo V : Phone : Mobile Phone : Sony India
Even I am thinking to buy this one. But I shall wait and see whether SE India launches Neo also which has 8 MP camera with Exmor sensor which should give better quality. I am using SE P1i with 3 MP camera for last 3 years, hence would like to upgrade to 8 MP camera. Neo with price upto 24000 MRP would be good buy.
So lets wait and watch.
Happy Dussehera to all.

Nokia 500 is just about to be launched. It will suit your requirements and will fit in your budget.

Don't go for C5-03, the touch screen sensitivity is very poor.

I remember adding a contact to the home screen, on my friend's phone which used to run on Eclair. So, I'll explain how to send a contact to home screen :

PS: My phone runs on 2.3.3 Gingerbread.

METHOD 1 :

1) This is how my homescreen looks like :

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-1.jpg

2) Press and hold on the screen, a menu pops up :

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-2.jpg

3) Select Shortcut

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-3.jpg

4) Select Direct Dial

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-4.jpg

5) Your contact list will open now :
Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-5.jpg

6) Select the contact you want to add to the homescreen

7) Done! Now you can see the contact on your home screen. To call the contact, just click on the icon.

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-6.jpg

METHOD 2

1) Open the contacts list.

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-11.jpg

2) Select the contact you want to send/add to the homescreen.

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-22.jpg

3) Pressing the options key on your phone will cause a menu to pop up.

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-33.jpg

4) Again a menu pops up :

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-44.jpg

If you select :
  • Contact : You get three options while clicking on the contact icon on the homescreen, viz : Call, Open Contact, Message. (Screenshot attached at the end of the post)
  • Direct Call : You can call the contact directly by clicking on the icon on the home screen
  • Direct Message : Clicking on the icon on the homescreen will open the message editor and you can send the message to the contact, just with a single click.

Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods-55.jpg

headers, I hope this helps. Please feel free to ping me, in case of any further queries.

Thank you.

I know that the resistive touchscreen of C5-03 is very disappointing. And more or less I have sidelined that option. The NOKIA 500 has a 3.2'' LCD screen and looks quite promising. Not sure when it'll launch or its price tag. Internet rumors suggest it to be near about 11,000/- INR.

Now could you tell me your opinion about DELL XCD35 ?
It comes with a 3.5'' TFT LCD screen. Have checked it out myself. Brilliant resolution and display. Its latest model comes with 2.2 Froyo OS version and retails at 8700/- INR.

Please let me know.

Thanks
