Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I am trying to convince myself to try out the CM7.1

@Clevermax...what do you see different from other Roms and why would you suggest CM7.1 over other roms.

Just to understand from a real time user. So please do write up on "WHY CM7.1" and convince me to try that rom as well

Have tried the CM7 before couple of times however bluetooth issue was always there. Not sure if it's fixed with this version. However I still prefer being on the Revolution Rom, haven't notice any difference in performance, battery life wasn't so good with CM7. With customization option I'd stay with Revolution. Leomar of Revolution has teamed up Checkrom and will be releasing Checkrom Revolution in coming days, can't wait for it.

Here are few custom roms i would suggest

Beginners - Litening6.1 - Easy to install and does wonder to battery life. I still cant imagine how this rom would work on the 2.3.5 knowing it gave more battery power in 2.3.4 itself.

Intermdediate - Batista2.7.1 - An excellent replacement to Litening and is constantly updated. Looks and feels great and comes with excellent font and theme. Requires a little care while installing and using.

A little more than Intermediate - LeoMar Revolution rom with Kitchen app - This is by far the best rom i have every used. Gives better than Litening battery life and has so much customization and options using the Kitchen App. Almost like picking a jar of pickels when you want some. The rom has 80 differnet fonts and dozens of kernals, themes, boot animations and what not. Once you are comfortable using the ODIN and are sure about recovery mode and not worried about 1000 of recovery restart, you should move to Leomar. The best ROM so far.

Adavnce -

CM7 - I never liked CM7 and my personal feeling is that, unless you are ready to keep upgrading roms based on nightly you should not give this a try. The stability and options and functions are still in the making and so it will take sometime before it stablizes.
I believe you're a bit misleading wrong here my man and you need to be specific.

Clevermax used a loose nomenclature here - we're talking here about ROM distributions.

MIUI and CM7 are the only two ROM Distributions here. Its quite decent and I don't see why you think CM7 is a work in progres. It has both stable and nightly versions and my Defy has run CM7 nightlies since May without any issue whatsoever.

Then there are individual ROMs:
- Litening/Batista for SGS II
- MS2Ginger for Defy

So BSB sahab, its not easy to give ad hoc recommendations of ROMs knowing how quickly they are developed - we can not give a global recommendation about stability but look/feel can be discussed for sure.

Or keep it a Mega-ROM-review-Update thread, updated regularly

(I think there's value in a standalone ROM review, Phone, apps thread)

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Does anyone know a good firewall app for an Andriod phone that hasn't been rooted? I tried a couple but both required the phone to be rooted in order to function.

Can you post latest results of that last charge? I have a SGS1 and am on Simplyhoney 5.1 revenge, with Talon 5s kernel. Wanted better battery life.

Create a zip file for TB from within TB, which you can install via recovery mode. I have unzipped the app backups created by TB (from PC) and loaded them from the SD card (without TB). Stock rom.

It is very easy to create another thread. But we have a philosophical issue here. The support team wants to ensure that Team-BHP doesn't became amazon.com for discussions. We already have enough members posting only in Shifting gears.

Team-BHP wants to remain primarily an automobile forum. Making the non-auto sections richer will dilute that idea. Therefore, very popular topics will remain in a single thread.

I am not a real-time user of CM7.1 now

Initially I had the HTC Sense ROM (Froyo based). I wanted to root and move to another ROM, just for the fun of doing it, plus the HTC Sense ROM was having a slow and not-so-smooth UI for scrolling and screen transitions. After watching youtube videos on how some custom ROMs performed, I was convinced that my phone is stuck with a slower ROM.

What brought me into CM7 was its wide popularity amongst AOSP ROMs. Went ahead and rooted, installed CM7, and I wasn't disappointed. UI was a lot more smoother and phone became a lot more snappier overall. I wanted to know whether some of the other popular ROMs were as good as CM7, hence I tried Oxygen ROM once, and it was not comparable with CM7 in UI smoothness and speed. Cyanogen was was clearly the winner.

I didn't have issues with Bluetooth, GPS or anything while using CM. Some things which CM7 could have provided built-in are a better dialer, better mail client, A2SD support out of the box, more options for UI customizations, may be a firewall, application level protection and usability enhancements which I am seeing in my current ROM

A firewall by definition requires root/administrator privileges, whether it be on your computer or your phone. It is simply the nature of the application - if it has to stop other apps from using the network, then it has to have elevated privileges. No other way!

The RC display was a little twitchy. Even if I slightly move my phone, it used to switch from portrait to landscape and vice-versa. Sometimes the display used to have UI errors while switching. It used to be so common on my phone. But, since I moved to the latest version, there is none of the that. That is my initial impression since I moved. Since they have fixed the UI bug, it feels lot stable.

As we say in the software world, UI bugs are the most glaring since it is so visible to the customer.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

This is simply too cool and just too awesome. Now honest to god, even though I'm an android afficianado - its incredibly stupid to pass up an iPhone 4S for the SGS2:
SGS2 is anywhere from 27-30k.
iPhone4S is 32k for the apple UI and for such kickass features.

But yes, in the budget (upto 15k INR) range - android has cleaned out the iOS from the market.
