I am newbie to both Android and the LG Optimus one (P500). Forgive me if some of my questions are trivial

1. How do i install swype ? I cant seem to find it in the market place.
2. How do i exit any application. I use the back (or return key) to come out of a program ? I checked the task killer and quite a lot of program seem to be running. Is this the only place i can kill (or close) them ?
3. Contacts sent as a business card over sms are not received while via bluetooth its ok.

Would have more questions as I explore.

I picked one up a few days ago.

Swype is now in closed beta and is planning to be launched only by Feb 2011, you may find a beta build at some of the android warez forums.

Some apps will have an exit option when you hit the Menu button for the rest just use the Home and or back button to exit. From Froyo onwards task management has been greatly improved so don't worry too much about killing apps. More info at Android Task Killers are Dead

we'll see about android etc later once the technology becomes more popular and I become more familiar with it.

Can you list out the positives and negatives and how is it performing? Also what other phones did you consider and why did you select HTC desire?

Well, I need a few days of learning and playing with the phone before I list any feedback.

Why I selected this:
I wanted only an android (I am a Linux user).
My heart was initially set on Samsung Galaxy S for its 4 inch screen.
Though anything above 10K to 15K was not affordable for me, I got this as a gift for myself for something good I had achieved recently!
Screen Quality was the number one priority for me. Researching various brands and models over several months, I could not find anything within 15K with a hi-res screen. Since I already owned a Nokia 5230 with 640x360 3.2inch I did not want to settle for anything less.
And I wanted Froyo out of the box, others had 2.1 or lower versions.

I still feel guilty for splurging this amount on a mobile, in the next few months there surely will be cheaper ones coming out, but I had been on a holiday trip to Chennai and I happened to see this at a store and I fell for it! (I did spend a sleepless night before the day I bought, researching the net and found that a lot of magazines and others called this the best model of 2010).

In the couple of days I have owned this, it has so far met my expectations.

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

xingamazon - while I cannot answer any of your question, please note that LG seems to have two similarily named phones - one of them is a dual sim one, and is NOT Android.

Also, which of the android models available in India is most mod friendly?

Is there an India specific android community / forum / mailing list?

you're on an india specific android community - this thread is it
but seriously you could just hang out on xda (xda-developers), don't know what you mean by india specific.

The android models in India that are most mod friendly are the ones which xda devs work on and are available globally. You will be better off with HTC products or direct google models (nexus one or nexus S) as they are mostly the ones worked on for mods. LG, Samsung, Sony are typically left behind when it comes to mods and latest updates.

Jassi, out of the available models in India currently, which is the one that you suggest for a person moving from Nokia E71. We cannot get Nexus models in India. Hence, is it recommended to buy them in US and bring it to India or would you suggest to buy one that is available in India only. If so, what do you suggest?
Thanks in advance..

Did you consider HTC Desire only for this reason over Samsung Galaxy-S?

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I just ported Froyo on Galaxy 3 for a friend. It is much much better in terms of display and speed. My bench mark was Angry Birds. Earlier the game was completely unplayable because the screen lag was heavy and could hardly see the graphics. Now it's a different story altogether. Even the GPS issue is fixed. Getting a GPS fix in a couple minutes at the most.
Friend is happy.

being a long time user of touch keyboards and now very used to the android native kb in landscape mode, I found swype interesting but not so easy in landscape mode where you could use 2 thumbs to type. Not sure if i am missing something, or if things will get better over some hours of use. At the moment, first impressions i can type faster than swype

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

@jassi - swype is infinitely faster than touch typing once you get the hang of it.

Its best when you use just your index finger while holding the phone in the other hand.
In portrait mode you can get away with using just your thumb of the hand you're holding the phone with (this is how i do it most of the time).

@bharanidharang - swype just opened their public BETA. You can probably get instructions on their site -- but keep in mind its a beta, so might not be perfect.

SlideIT is an alternative available on the market (though i haven't used it).
