re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Just did a practical iPhone vs Android real-world test during my Madurai & Munnar trip. Quoting from my post in this travelogue thread: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...r-chennai.html

As it turned out, the Android out-performed the iPhone in almost all aspects. It would get mail, but the iPhone would say "connection to server failed". It would get FB notifications several minutes before the iPhone would. And GPS... as I mentioned above, in Madurai and Munnar when I really needed it, the Optimus one's built-in offline GPS app "NDrive" is the only thing that worked. I did have "Mobile Maps India" installed on iPhone as well, but it didn't pick up GPS signal in most places. Except graphics and games, the Android out-performed the iPhone in all other aspects. Well, enough of this side note I guess.
I was actually planning to sell the Optimus One, but now thinking maybe I should sell the iPhone 3GS instead. Or still use both, because the games on iPhone are unmatched.

I am surprised there's no Angry Birds in Ubuntu Software Center!

Can Ubuntu users share the link / procedure to download and install? I'm on 10.10

What it does - One can type from PC and sms is sent from phone

Download the file, rename it as zip, and extract the two files. rename birds.dat files to birds.zip and extract the portable version of the game from it - copy it anywhere and you can play.

If you get an error while running the game, rename the other file to .exe and install it. It is VC 8.0 redistributable and won't do any harm. After that, the game should work fine.

Enjoy Angry birds on PC! I like it better than playing it in phone.

CM, thanks for the alternate link but my link file is working perfectly, its got VC++ patch too. Still I will try this too. Is it an un locked version? The first one is a trial version.

True, me too love to play in PC rather than on a phone.

Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

Generally it means that modded app is identified by Android OS as totally different app, not connected to Google Maps at all. There are several consequences:
  • Android forbids to install same app twice. If you want to install modded app, you have to uninstall original one first. -renamed variant is detected as different app, so you could install it normally and then you will have installed both original and modded app.
  • It's much worse if you want to replace system app - and Google Maps is a system app on many devices. You can't uninstall system apps just like that, cause they're write-protected. You need root and probably some hacking, so if you had Google Maps preinstalled on your device and don't have a root or don't want to hack, then use one of -renamed variants.
  • Some apps call GM by name and if you have -renamed variant, then they can't find modded GM, cause it's detected as different app. People have such problems with Car Dock, Street View and few others

@sajjt:

Just going back to this post, just wanted to ask couple of things

1) What is the difference between the original brut mod and the renamed version? Both seem to have the same version number (4.6.0.4686)

2) Is this mod meant for Google maps 5.x? I currently have the version 4.4.0

CM, its all in the same post. Renamed and the original are same. Only thing is once you install the original brut ver your stock maps will get overwritten, for retaining the stock maps, you need to use the renamed version. I didn't want to loose my stock maps anyway so I choose the renamed version, it may take bit more memory though. Stock maps using only 3.55MB where as Brut maps is taking whopping 9.55MB which can be justified for the Navigation. May be after some trials I can delete the stock maps to free up some memory.

This one uses 4.6.0-brut17 (#4686) where as my stock Google map is 4.3.0(#4307)

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

^^ Thanks sajjt, that clarifies my questions... As of now, all my map cache of Trivandrum is taking up 200 MB and the file count has reached 6700+. Not good for a file system.. Badly need a newer version where it caches the map to a zip/tar file or a Sqlite db.

Very Very Addictive Indeed! Thanks for sharing...

Any idea how this can be run in windowed mode instead of full-screen?

Edit: Found it... Just opened the 'config.lua' with notepad and set Fullscreen to 'false'. Thanks again.

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Samsung announced new and improved Galaxy S II & a bigger Tab 10.1 at the mobile world congress at Barcelona.

Both has upgraded operating system, processor, camera and bigger & better screen.

The way and at the pace Samsung is moving seem to be putting the final nail in Nokia's coffin.

N8 was too little too late, bye bye Nokia welcome Samsung.
