Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

A interesting point that came up in my office. I think it will also apply to a lot of us.

You may be in violation of your company rules if you use an external or non-authorized client for email, calender, IM etc.
This is because the client would be storing your emailID and password.

Please check before you install and use such softwares.

Does this now have capability to understand indian road names?
I was sick of hearing "Akbar rd" pronounced as "ayk-baar erred".

It works for most of the user apps. I have shared SwiftKey keyboard's full version like that - works like a charm.

Other apps we shared - Set CPU, QuickOffice Pro, Remote Desktop Client, Launcher 7 (full) & Talking Ben (full).

Actually the apps are in /sd-ext/app folder (in sd card partition) in my phone, I made it so due to internal memory constraints. I simply wrote system/app.

In most of these cases of paid apps, I think you can pay and install the app, copy the apk from the app folder elsewhere and go for a refund quickly, then it is possible to install the app from where you had copied it. (Not recommended, and not supporting the Devs I know) This is possible in case of a rooted phone where you have access to the app folders using a root explorer.

BTW, Any experiences of sulekha.com anyone? One X is selling at 32.x K there and it is the least price I can see. Go ahead?

--- days after I bought Sygic!

--- the day after, having bought Sygic, I dumped the modded maps to install the latest version of Google Maps to test out the offline mapping.

However, it is not all bad. I don't think that routing/navigation works on offline maps without an active data connection. Why they can't see that Nokia just did something good, and give us the same or better, I don't know. Maybe they don't see Nokia as competition anyway.

Finally Yay? Yes: it is a big step in the right direction.

The weirdest thing is not that it mistakes the Indian-language words, but that it mangles English language words like "road."

Ultimately it all uses Microsoft ActiveSync (even Apple does) so it would comply. Unless your office has a brain-dead rule-reading babu (which is often the case!! )

b. More importantly, google will always know what is happening on your phones. It would be storing such market conflict / apps installed without market information on its servers (remember the option to backup your account with google etc?). Why get into any trouble in the future later?

what u said, works only for system apps (user apps will be under /data) and can be done by app managers too

Actually it depends on App developer , A developer may query IMEI or MAC ( in case of WiFi only tablet) for device locking or he may choose to lock with a google id but most application developers do not do anything simply because copying is one of the many ways to make an app popular.
Here is a code snippet from stack overflow on how to do it

Well there are several issues , Active Sync is from your device to the Server , but several companies are extremely cautious for the data at rest as well.
Now in case of unauthorized email clients , document viewers etc there is a possibility of data being relayed or jailbreak the document DRM solutions the enterprise may have employed.
It is similar to organizations restricting installing freeware / shareware apps on office laptops.

PS : Apple is not necessarily more secure the most secure is BB OS 10 which is based on QNS Nutrino OS because last year they got compliance certificate for US DOD.

Not all I guess, for ex: Lotus Launcher syncs up with Notes server, and stores the id, password in the phone and sends them out to the server (in the URL) for every page refresh. It violates basic security principles, especially for office email.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

SwiftKeyX is available for Rs. 60 (on sale today). There are other games too, you can check them out.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/c...SeasonEndSale?

Sorry, if this was reported earlier.

Edit: Also worth noting is that the new Micromax A87 is priced at less than Rs. 6000.
It comes with 1GHz CPU, GPS, 4" screen (most likely 800x400 resolution). Not bad for the price as a full time GPS device?

Thanks for that update. Have downloaded the trial version. Hadn't heard of this earlier, so trying it out now. Weirdly I keep focusing on the suggestions than actually typing!

1. There should be a 3G or H displayed instead of E next to your network symbol
2. Run a SpeedTest

+1 to that. Moreso, when it has a fully stable and as-good-as-a-daily-driver version of CM10/JB also.

Well, you had your option to get the robust Navfree. Frankly, I don't see a point in paying for Sygic, when equally good alternatives exist.

What timing! My trial version of SwiftKey expired today. I love it so much that I didn't think twice and bought the discounted app.

Swype is a great product too, comes pre-installed on most phones, but somehow with JB they have discontinued this practice. I have that installed along side.

Didn't like TouchPal that much. It ain't that intuitive.

What is equally good?

By the way, I believe Sygic to be a good investment. Nothing comes close - certainly not the free alternatives.

I know Sygic is good, infact great.

Navfree is slightly better software than Sygic. And its free too. Same goes for OSMand and now the official Google Maps.
