Even recently Google released a new base band for Nexus 5 devices in Australia, Newzealand and India.
Agreed. This is the part which confounds me. From whatever little I understand, it specifies the frequency bands that the phone is supposed to be connecting on.

In motorola defy, it was a clear hit / miss affair. If it was the right baseband, everything would work perfectly, or the calls would simply be terrible and drop all the time.

Now this is the first thing that MIUI would have customized for India in advance - heck, they may have done it earlier because without this, even those who bought the MI3 outside India would have been unable to use the phone at all. Now the official India pieces should definitely have it sorted out.

A 20 dB difference in signal is simply too high. The phone should not be usable in day to day usage if the baseband was incorrectly set, as akshay is reporting.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I have not seen any devices which allow a change of baseband, unless the device is running some custom ROM. Doesn't this baseband change also require a rooted phone?

Edit: The South Asia baseband options on my Defy also do not work all the time for me. If I am in the country side, I need to generally change the baseband and select another frequency and reboot. My home in city has weak indoor signals and that also means, I have to use another baseband frequency.

Looks like flipkart and xiaomi are now playing with customers and attempting to increase hype. For today's xiaomi sale first they had sent a mail with an elaborate process for buying. 1 hour before the sale, they sent a mail telling that the regular buying process needs to be followed. Within 30-45 seconds of the sale starting the website showed out of stock. Wonder how many units they put out for sale for it to get sold in 30 seconds. Looks like a marketing gimmick to me.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

MI3 sold out todays sale in officially 5 seconds...

They had imported 10400 units last week according to zauba.

Did they manage to sell 10000+ units in 5 seconds?

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I got a call at 12.30 from flipkart that since my order got cancelled last time, I need not wait in the queue, by 6pm they will send a mail with the order link and I can directly buy. Waiting for the mail now.

Baseband is one of the three operating systems each GSM smartphone runs, it also has its own CPU (Other two OS are SIM OS and general puspose OS like Android / iOS/ Windows mobile). Even SIM has a tiny CPU.

Baseband + radio configuration determines if a given phone will work fine in a specific country or not.

For Samsung phones, this means matching these two things:

1. Baseband image
2. CSC (radio configuration among other things)

In case of radio issues, this is the place to look for and troubleshoot issues. It does requires some familiarity with programming and Linux/Unix.

E.g: If you have a Vodafone SIM and want to check Airtel network.

Hell yeah it's good :-) . 2 days on standby mode is pretty normal, I can see that the screen wasn't turned on a lot hence the great battery life. Don't worry, my moto g is pretty much the same.

Guys has anybody tried a custom ROM with the Note 2? My phone is out of warranty now and I was wondering what are suggested ROM's.

As a business owner, its an elegant way to avoid investing crores for a sudden unpredictable surge. Why change hardware when you can incentivize behavioral change?

How would you deal with it, if you were the CEO of FK?

Having said that, i agree with your pov as well - the end outcome is rather painful. A customer needn't have to do so much just to buy a darned phone.

It's not just a Flipkart thing, nor is it just a phone thing: the industry hypes these things so that people have to buy on the first day. Is there anything more silly than queuing outside an actual store all night to buy a new phone or an operating system upgrade?

It is part of modern world behaviour.

But hey, I don't do it: I just grumble about it!

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Dad bought a Nexus 4 and a airtel sim. He is facing the most peculiar problem. Internet does not work. I put in another airtel sim on the handset, internet works. I put his sim on another handset, the internet works. Tried calling Airtel call center, they are of no use. I just don't have a clue on what to do.
