Post all Overclocking queries here

Hey guys,
my exams are getting over tomorrow and was planning on getting the latest edition of need for speed(i.e.most wanted). The problem here is that i know the game will have some serious graphics and that will lead to my comp lagging considerably.I have the onboard graphics which is ati radeon 200 which is not sufficient.Could you guys give me tips in overclocking the cpu-athlon 64 3000+ on an rs480m mobo.Anyone who has some experiance in overclocking please shed some light on this

Hi binz,

A word of caution when overclocking an AMD cpu... they do tend to run pretty hot, hope your PC has an additional Cabinet cooling fan to help it stay cool.
If the temp goes too high, I think Athlon is designed such that it will automatic slow down to protect itself rather than overheat and shutdown + hang the OS...

Falcon.

I agree...but overheating happens mostly when you overclock intel processors....amds are great overclockers and ya i have the extra cabinet fan

Don't overclock it too much, it'll just heat up and reduce ur performance. I use AMD too, and there isn't much of a difference in overclocking. Try to get more ram and a good AGP card.

And why r u over clocking, Most Wanted should run fine on AMD 3000+ 64bit if u have atleast 512mb ram and a 128AGP.

Which onboard graphics do u have? If it is the nVidia FX series, which i doubt it'll be...u can over clock it. And u'll need atleast a proper 128mb AGP to play it properly.

spend 3k, get 128mb agp with 8x support.

whats ur ddr? 333MHz or 400MHz or 800MHz? If you mobo supports 800, get 512MB with 800MHz ddr.

With the MSI rs480m mb, i don't think overclocking from the BIOS is a possibility. You've gotta do it with a 3rd party software. Instead, you have a PCI-Express 16x slot on it. Go ahead and buy a PCI-Ex card and the results will be worth it. Also, if you have a spare monitor, you can pair the on board and the new graphics card and get a really killer, wide display spread across 2 monitors obviuosly.

yup, get a PCI Express card ( forget the agp cards), 512MB/1GB 400MHz DDR and you will be a lot happier!

dogdiga-I will wait for my dad to pick some pci-e card from dubai.Till then could you give me the details of any third party software.
jkdas-i already have 1gb of ddr ram at 400MHz.
now till i buy the card, any suggestions on how to overclock the cpu.

binz

If ur over clocking the CPU to get better graphics, i don't think it'll help. The GeForce FX 5200 128mb costs Rs.2200. It should be enough to play most of the latest games which high graphics

IMO, try to get a good PCIE card. Its all u need to spend for the NFS:MW. U'r rig with 3000+ and 1 GB DDR400 is perfect just waiting for that good PCIE. I suggest u go for a Leadtek 128MB PCIe 6600 TD. Its like 5900 bucks. Awesome graphics, man.

binz, I have tried overclocking on AMD. Its not too difficult, and as long as you have alarms in place(Automatic shutdown in case temp above 75 degrees) its safe.
But its not going to help you much. In case of gaming when you use any Engine such as OpenGL or DirectX, it runs directly off the graphics card GPU. So you need a better graphics card.

Of course you can overclock your graphics card and wring out 10-20% better framerates, but its not recommemded.

As for you CPU 3000+ is more than enough for any game presently available, including the much dreaded(Resource wise) Doom3. I suggest get a better card like the nvidia FX. you can get a resonably good card for 8-10K. Also get around 1GB of ram. 512 is bare minimum you must have to ensure good gameplay.

Ask him to get a PCI Exp. card with X700 or X800 chipset with 256MB to sort you graphic problem.

for overclocking...
http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=933&page=4

and hope ur mobo supports overclocking. Please see its manual.

Pros overclock teh chips but they do have very good cooling system (water cooled etc.) and I hope you have seen some in various websites.
