Facebook Email Service! A "Gmail killer"!! Launch today?

There are rumors spreading that Facebook will be launching today, the email service under the project name "Project Titan" which is also referred to as "Gmail Killer" internally in Facebook.

Facebook could use the domain name FB.Com which was acquired by Facebook recently.

I will start registering few good mail ids once they launch the mail service.

The service has been launched and will be rolled out in phases, from what I have read about it, it does not seem to be a gmail killer, it does not have falgging of mails and a few other features which standard e-mail service has.

In my opinion this will not be able to kill the e-mail services but will be something new and interesting, waiting to try it though.

I don't think it can match GMail. I'm sticking with GMail.

Facebook calls it "Facebook email".

Facebook has updated about the @Facebook.com email service in the Help Center.

No email service can kill other email service, earlier it was hotmail (which still exists), there are plenty more which still exists and are widely used eg: AOL, Yahoo, lycos, graffiti, mail etc.
IMO no service provider can clean sweep others.

What is Facebook? Honestly, I visit it rarely if at all though I have my profile on it for the heck of it. Of course it helps if you want to see all the innuendo's of what goes on with everyday life of people you don't know.

Facebook is an e-replacement for real life gossip mongering.

Otherwise why should I get updates on my front page of what my far away (physically, as well as conceptually) acquaintance comments about his ex-girlfriend's new pajamas.

Facebook is a cool application. People need to educate themselves on how to use it properly.

e.g. People should learn to tweak privacy settings so that someone sitting miles away would not receive updates on his/her ex's new pajamas.

On the other hand one can easily block updates from one's "far away acquaintance" if s/he are not interested in knowing about someone's ex-girlfriend's new pajamas.
I think this is cool as one might not be able to do it in real life.

In real life no one would even bother.

Hence, my take on FB as an "e-gossip" board.

Of course you may build customizations so that FB works only like say gtalk etc.

But then that is not there by default, and is neither the USP of FB.
Orkut was slightly more focussed on only friendly scraps - but even that has taken a plunge into "e-gossip board" functionality.

Similarly, whats the big deal about gmail? I have been using yahoo mail since close to 13 years and before that hotmail. Its all mail.
I guess facebook would be cool if used on mobile with 3g.

Re: Facebook Email Service! A "Gmail killer"!! Launch today?

FB has launched the email service. the mail id is same as FB userid. And mails received in FB, will get stored in the same old message inbox.

To activate email, go to messages and click on activate email.

Launched ? I think its been there for a long time now. I remember seeing it around 5 months back. Its no proper mailbox. Its more of an address to get your messages direct to you FB inbox. Cheers.
