Congratulations. I got the same body a few weeks back with Tamron 28-75 G2. I plan to add the Samyang 35mm 1.4 FE II somewhere down the line for general purposes and the street. Once you start using it, the camera will grow on you. There are lots of Youtube videos explaining each of the features and menus. Happy clicking.

I am using CaptureOne Express. It's free and can process Sony Lossless Compressed files which the Darktable cannot at the moment.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

I have added the Samyang AF 135/1.8 to my collection of e-mount lenses.

It is a chubby baby, with an 82mm filter thread! But it is not very heavy. I have been enjoying its first days out at Carnatic-music concerts.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Hi everyone
Need some advice. I use a Nikon D500 paired with Nikor 200-500 mm. I shoot wildlife predominantly and find this combination quite good.
However, been contemplating to graduate to Mirrorless. Nikon Z7 and Fuji XT 4 are two options that I’ve shortlisted. Advantage Z7 would be that I can use my present bunch of lenses on the new camera too (is that right?).
What I want to know is- does it make sense to trade D500 for a Z7? D500 is a beast in it’s own right.
Thanks

Haven’t used Nikon. So can’t really compare.

But been a Fuji user (hobby) for quite some years now (started using the X-E2 and still enjoying it) and my wife uses X-T3 for her profession. I have used both of these models.

If you are a professional user, may be you need not disturb your workflow(and costs of a new system) by changing to Fuji. But if you are an amateur and enjoy shooting, then you will enjoy Fuji a lot. I also had a Yashica minister-D (Film rangefinder) in the past, which was very analog and always fun to shoot. Fujifilm X line up is just a lot of fun to shoot with similar to those analog film ones. X-T4 can be used for professional as well as for hobby.

Let us know what you choose eventually.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

This is for a student who recently joined a BDes (Design) course.
Here's what the institution handed out:
Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras-img20220821wa0026.jpg

The student already has an Olympus EM-10 Mark II mirrorless micro 4/3 camera with 14-42 Kit Lens, but if the institution insists on a camera with APS-C sensor, there's no option but to bite the bullet and buy another camera.

Also, I'm inclined to recommed going with a mirrorless camera and avoiding the DSLRs. Would love to hear the views of experts here.

Any mirrorless made in the last 10 years is good enough for the process. What the college has given is a guideline, not a rule. But it is good to have at least one prime lens, as they suggested. The kit lens has its limitations.

I'm considering the Olympus M Zuiko 25mm f/1.8 lens, would this be a good choice ?

Priced USD $399, saw one offer on Amazon dot com for $299, can try to see if someone traveling can carry it.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Yes, that is effectively 50mm. I have that lens, it is excellent.

If wildlife is your priority, I would advise to stay away from Fuji at the moment. Although they do have a couple of lenses, the overall ecosystem is not there yet for someone not entrenched in and used to Fuji.

Not an expert by any means, but I agree with the post above. The cameras that the institution has listed are suggestions/guidelines and shouldn’t be a rule. The Olympus should serve him/her/them fine for the purpose.

On the other question, even I would suggest a mirror less going forward. All major companies have ditched the R&D in DSLRs and it is highly unlikely that the tech will evolve any further. Production may be impacted as well. But in the student’s case, don’t buy for the sake of the institute unless he/she/they were planning to anyway.

May I know why you are looking for an upgrade? The D500 is a wonderful Camera on its own right and its the perfect tool for Wildlife, offering the exta 1.5x reach over FF cameras. You will end up losing the 1.5x reach if you go for the FF Z7 and in wildlife, this reach makes all the difference. The 200-500 is a brilliant piece of glass and its a perfect combo you have. Moreover, weight should not be an issue since a minor drop in weight will not be significant, but will make your Z7 + Adapter + 200-500 all the more front heavy which makes things unbalanced. If I were you I'd hold on to the D500 until Ive exhaused whatever this piece of equipment can delivery physically. But if you are in the mood to sell the D500, pls DM me

You'd need an adapter for that right?

I have all three - the 25mm 45mm and the 9-18mm. Between the two fixed focal length lenses I like the 25mm better - the results are more pleasing.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Currently, I have the Tamron 28 75 2.8 G2 on my Sony A7M4 camera. 35mm prime is now low priority thanks to the Godox TT685II flash I picked up sometime back (though eventually, I plan to get the 35mm prime in the future)

Was divided between Samyang 85mm f1.4 ii (for candid portraits) and Tamron 50 400 (casual ultra zoom for the zoo, moon, and urban birds) to add to my collection. For serious birding and wildlife, I rent the Sony 200 600 G and 1.4x Teleconverter. It's quite heavy but can manage with a monopod.

Finally deciding to go for the Tamron 50 - 400mm and the 85mm prime can wait for next year. For anyone who is using it or has considered it, what's your opinion on its performance and any alternative that I can check? Youtube reviews are generally positive.

I have the A7IV as well and looking for a flash. How is the Godox in terms of getting in and out of the horse shoe mount?
I read that some Godox models are a tight fit and eventually the plastic part breaks.
