Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Guys, I am a point & shoot guy, though I am a bit tech-savy; (after all I am a TBHPian...). The point of this post is, I plan to retire both my Lumix and Kodak and upgrade myself to either a DSLR or a Mirrorless. I am very much aware about the ongoing war between DSLR and EVIL.

The budget is between 35K and 50K. I need this camera in action on 19th AUG so I'd make the purchase on 2nd week of AUG. We are also planning into semi-pro Macro photography (of flowers) once we are comfortable with the camera but this is ex-budget.

I admire Nikon very much (but am not a fanboy) and have shortlisted the D3200 and D5100.

Can you BHPmates kindly suggest any Mirrorless that can match the above 2 DSLRs?

Thanks in advance!

Sony Nex-5N. If you can get this model in India, go for it. The image quality is very good, and the best form factor for anyone moving up from PnS cameras.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

The semi pro macro photography does not need a great camera, but a great macro lens. Check which company offers best combo of a decent camera and a good macro.

Sigma 105 or canon 100 or tokina 100 or Nikon 105 i guess are all good macros.

Lenses matter more than just the camera. A canon 650D can take exactly same pictures as a 1dX if the lenses are right. There are definitely better advantages of using a 1DX but thats a different story.

If you are going for the DSLR, get the Nikon D3200 with the Nikon 105mm macro lens. If you are looking for a compact body, get either the NEX 5R or the NEX 6. But be prepared that there are no good macro objectives for the NEX system in the tele range.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Thanks JMaruru, VW2010 and joe1980...!

I've done my research and it's going to a DSLR.

Either the D3200 or the D5100. The D5200 is beyond budget, and it is another dilemma for me but that's for this thread, let me move on to the DSLR thread!

Thanks once again!

I guess Olympus E-PL5 + 60mm f/2.8 is the only option in mirrorless that will match the dSLR equivalent. The combo will cost $950 on Amazon. But, no point buying this only for macro.

I hear m.43 60mm f/2.8 is an amazing macro lens, just like the 4/3 lens 50mm F/2. I sold the latter after 6 years at 80% of the original price. It flew off the shelf in two days in Amazon.

However, if any existing m4/3 users want great macro, 60mm F/2.8 is a sure pick.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Thanks Samurai san!

I picked up a D3200 yesterday with the 18-55 kit lens. INR 30,100 with a Nikon NC filter thrown in. Very much satisfied with the performance.

I'll be looking at the macro in another 2-3 months. I can say I need to get familiarize with the 3200, but the point is, I need to find the moolah for the macro.

So, my discussion in this thread is closed, I guess.

try tokina 100mm or tamron 90mm.

save for the sigma 150mm os . best macro i rate even over the canon l lens

Congrats on your new DSLR.

Well, you always have the DSLR thread to post any queries in. Plenty of discussions/arguments/debates to keep you entertained AND well informed.

Congratulations. I bought this one as well a couple of months ago with the Nikon 105mm macro lens. As I also own an NEX, I find it a bit hard to get adjusted with my DSLR's complex button system. But I'm enjoying my time playing with my DSLR.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Guys, need suggestions for a nice half case or full case made of leather or other protective & grip enhancing material for my Fuji XE-1 and my wife's Olympus OMD EM5.

Are any of you Fuji/Oly owners using one? I find these cameras too small for my hands and need a case that would make them easier and more comfortable to grip.

I've looked at options on eBay. Checked some superb quality leather cases but they are really expensive @ $150+/case that means totalling to over $300 for the 2 cameras. I am not looking at spending that kind of money but do not want some shabby product either.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

@R2D2

I am in the same boat but there is no way i am spending 300/200$ on a case. I rather get another lens than waste on a leather case.

There are some cheap alternate ones in Ebay in US and UK. You can try them. They are around 20 pounds to 67 pounds. Again that kind of money i may pool it back to get a good lens.

55-200 looks optically exceptional and its again not a conventional generic zoom.

Fujinon looks very attractive and the lens road map gives me more excitement than anything.

Looking at the prices, I never bothered for one.

But if you want something special, check this. And please, don't copy it!
