Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Yes, almost all mirrorless makers use the same size sensor as their dSLR offering. Sony might even full frame soon. Nikon is the only exception, they thought smaller body means smaller sensor. Talk about bringing a knife to a gun fight.

Here is a nice comparison between EM1 with a fullframe D600.

http://blog.mingthein.com/2013/09/11...e-m1-review-2/

Knowing Olympus, I am quite confident that OMD EM1 will drop drastically in price by middle of next year. That is when I will pick it up.

I think crop factor for Canons is 1.6 and for Nikon DX it is 1.5 (Nikon DX is slightly larger sensor than the APSC of Canon)

I suspect he is asking about mirrorless cameras, not dSLR. That would be Nikon CX, a crop factor of 2.7 no less.

Ah OK. there are so many mirrorless ILCs

Fuji's ILCs have crop factor same as Nikon DX (same size sensor)

Sony has Nex line (same crop factor as Nikon DX) and also FF mirrorless!

I think Nikon has various mirrorless models- I think theres one that you mentioned (CX) and also they have a DX sensor mirrorless as well.

Canon has APSC mirrorless.

The world of mirrorless is quite interesting... lots of options

Really? What is the Nikon DX mirrorless offering out there? I am not aware of this.

Nikon Coolpix A has DX sensor though its not an ILC. It could be called an advanced Point and Shoot perhaps but it competes with the likes of D5200 pricewise.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

You can't consider Coolpix as a mirrorless camera, no matter what sensor it has. That would make every P&S and mobile camera as mirrorless. Mirrorless specifically refers to ILCs that don't have mirror. That way Sony RX1 has a fullframe sensor, very expensive, and it is still a point n shoot.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

There is new Sheriff in town, or at least in my camera kit.

Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras-wp_20140207_004.jpg

This lens will be replacing two of my lenses, the 17mm F/1.8 and the 12-50mm kit lens. But I am wondering whether I should sell the 12-50mm or not. Someday I will sell the EM5, and it may be better to sell it as a kit. Any thoughts? The dirt on the body is thanks to recent Bangalore OTR.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Anyone using any of the Minolta SR mount (MC/MD) lenses on their NEX? After looking at some sample pictures online that was taken with a Minolta 28mm f2.8 lens with the NEX combo, I thought of getting one for my NEX-6. I want to buy it just for the bokeh it produces. Is anyone else also finding this lens to be bokehlicios when used with your NEX?

Congrats! How do you find its performance?

I'd recommend keeping the lens since you plan to sell the EM5 for what I assume to be the EM1. I've seen literally unused copies of this lens going for about 10-12K. It may not be a stellar lens like the 12-40 but it is weather sealed.

Selling only a camera body which was originally a part of a kit is a tad bit difficult. Psychological impact when one sees the empty slot in the EM5 kit box.

I managed to find a used one, but upon inspection I noticed that it has some white spots on the front and the back of the glass. Unfortunately, I do not have any image of the lens that shows those white spots. Should I stay away from it? The guy that would sell me the lens assured that the IQ will not be affected because of those spots, but somehow I'm not convinced. I also have to consider the fact that the lens is almost 20 years old.

No, i was asking the crop factor of an EVIL compared to DSLR (1.5x~1.6x)

So do EVIL cameras from all manufacturers have approximately the same crop factor,ie, x2 plus of minus some value?

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

All manufacturers except for Nikon use the same crop factor as their dSLR cameras.

I am yet to explore the 12-40mm much. The night photographs look impressive. I need to check out daylight performance. The 17mm F/1.8 already sent away. Keeping the 12-50mm for now,

Olympus and Panasonic use 2X
Sony Nex line uses 1.5X
Sony Alpha mirrorless (A7/A7R) is full frame
Fuji I think is 1.6X

So it depends on manufacturer.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Managed to get hold of a used Minolta MD.Rokkor 35mm f2.8 lens. I did play with it and managed to shoot a couple of shots. I like the color rending that this lens produces. It sort of gives that vintage look. It is a bit soft wide open at 2.8. I'm yet to try it with higher f numbers. Being a manual focus, it slows me down a bit and it makes me think twice about my composition. This will be my walk around lens for the next couple of months. Here is my NEX 6 with the Minolta MD.Rokkor 35mm mounted.
