Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

I'm planning to buy a mirror-less camera at around 40k INR. I'm clueless about modern day photography and wish to learn it with this new purchase. I travel quite a lot and I wish to capture nature photographs and people's portraits. I've been using cybershot camera so far and whatever I've captured with it, my friends have always appreciated that the captures are good, at least that's what they comment in Facebook.

I want to take my interest in photography to next level and I wan't to go lightweight, hence the mirror-less route. Please let me know which camera gear is best suited for my needs. All I'm looking far are the following:

- Should possibly be the most recently launched.
- Brand doesn't matter, but VFM does
- Should have good after sales support and good product kit upgrade support

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Unless you mention your budget, it will be hard to advice. Keep in mind that mirrorless is not as cheap as dSLR of similar quality. Compactness comes at 20-25% price premium. But if compactness is an important criteria, then you are in the right place.

I moved from dSLR to mirrorless in 2012 and haven't regretted it so far. Since you are mainly into landscapes and portraits, mirrorless can address it very well. Telephoto is the only area where mirrorless is weak, that is because the size advantage goes away. People who are into wildlife/birding/sports photography should stick with dSLR.

Thank you. The budget is Rs. 40,000.

At the moment, I look forward to acquire a body kit and a lens(that could be used in most occasions) under this budget.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

That budget will limit you to just the body and kit lens. It also rules out olympus system since there is nothing latest in that budget.

With Sony you have these. Panasonic has some recent cameras, check them out, I am not familiar with their prices. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1 is a good option.

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

The ILCE/A-6000 is a bit expensive but has one of the best APS-C sensors ,with really good high ISO performance and fast AF with surprisingly good tracking, good video quality.
Compared to the ILCE/A-5000 it has a EVF and better sensor, faster AF.

Actually Sony kit lens + body combos often start around 25K only.
15K can buy a an additional mid telephoto like 55-210.

I wonder if Olympus is keen to launch this in India!
I really am impressed by the Panasonic GH4, but I wonder if oly can give that kind of accurate AF even with a polarizer attached(which apparently GH4 can manage pretty easily due to its special contrast AF

It is on Olympus India website. They must have released here.

He specifically said most recently launched. So 5R won't qualify, it came in 2012.

thats the most recent camera in 5 series.
Just like DSLRs you have
1. Entry level around 30K
2. Mid level around 45-60K
3. Pro level around 80K+

Even Sony mirrorless follow the same pricing
Starting from 25K for entry level to 100,000 for full frame

Not sure about India, but even Olympus and Panasonic follow these pricing trends in the west.
For Sony USA pricing ~ India pricing which is very nice!

Re: Mirrorless or EVIL Cameras

Hey Cliffhanger

If you can raise your budget a bit then the product shared by aim120 ( Sony ILCE/A-6000 ) is a very compelling choice for about 50k. (Or you can also consider the Sony Nex 6 for about same price). For 40k your best bet is a DSLR only, something like Nikon D3300.

If you do consider the ILCE/A-6000 then you can buy the SEL50mm later (I think its around 20k) and that would make a very good portrait lens for this camera.

A6000 is amazing.
For prime, I think the 200$ 2 lens kit from sigma (19mm and 30mm) is a very good buy with excellent IQ.
But thats like a total budget of 50 upfront, and then 12-13K more(provided you have a USA connection).

That said, I like this about sony that they offer similar pricing in India and USA. Panasonic and Oly have ridiculous pricing in India.

52000 is sony.co.in price with 16-50 kit lens, and if you walk into a store its 50,000 INR
800*63 = 50400

Sony A7 body 24MP full frame
USA ~ 1700$ = 107100 INR
India price = 94990 from sony.co.in

Sony A7R 36MP full frame body
USA = 2298 ~ 144000
India = 124990

So India is actually cheaper than USA!
Sony knows how to make money in India - DO NOT PRICE CAMERAS RIDICULOUSLY OVER USA PRICES IN INDIA!!
