i would go for i5. But do take the three year warranty package. Its a must for dell lappy. Check my thread about dell service somewhere.

Re: frankmehta wants ® an Ultraportable: 12-13" Lightweight Laptop

Hey Frank,

My father has been using the Vostro V13 for a year now.Body of the V13 and the V130 are the same. Its a nice laptop and very light weight! Looks are sleek, slim. Comparable with the mac book air's. I would suggest you add the Complete Cover as mentioned by SirAlec. Would set you back by around Rs.6-8k. But for three years any hardware damage will be repaired free of charge. Explanation given to me by a sales rep was that even if your laptop breaks into half, dell will replace it!

Due to power fluctuation once the charger conked off and I got a replacement from dell within a day free of cost. Thanks to Complete Cover!

I overhead a customer complaining about Vostro's sound output. It has only 1 speaker and hence volume can be very low.

Why dnt you check Lenovo G460?

Vostro series are basically business oriented laptop's so the sound output is low. Lenovo G460 is not that lightweight

@Frank, the quotes contain your full address. You may want to take them off the forum.

The i3 is 33K.
The AMD based Toshiba with a dedicated ATI graphics card costs 28K(toshiba price) but street price is usually lower by 2K.
Its 14". If you really do not want to go above 13", well then dell is your only choice, otherwise, the toshiba makes more sense from a value point of view.

Re: frankmehta wants ® an Ultraportable: 12-13" Lightweight Laptop

As I understand from the quotations:
1. The laptop does come with an OS - Ubuntu.
2. There is no DVD drive provided.

Have you looked for any performance benchmarks for these laptops?
If not, you should check those and see if are really fast enough by your standards (since that was your requirement).

Oh absolutely! A dvd drive is redundant for me. I have an external DVD writer. Which I needn't even carry.

@ Frank, In my opinion this is a better choice than the Vostro series which are primarily meant for SMB market.

Do post your ownership review here.

Alienware was a small time American company that built high end gaming setups. It was bought out by dell in 2006.
