Internal DVD Writer to External.

Hey anyone tried converting an Internal DVD Writer to an external one with the help of the Enclosure? Would like to go for such a kind of setup and looking on Sony DRU-810A writer(3150+tax) in box packing and TECH-COM casing(750+). Both does have 1 year warranty.

Hi!
if u can delay it avoid buying now. bec in one year new format DVD's are coming in to market. the DVD's which can store 27 Gb data ( this is certainity once the fight between sony and hitachi is settled between the the two formats blue ray and HD-DVD) infact hitachi is relasing its HDDvd players shortly
if u want it immediately check for dual layer writing + DVD RAM writing capability. most of the dvd writers in the price range of 3K will be dual layer only but check for compatibilty of DVD RAm as well as DVD-ROM and DVD+ROM
hard disk: seagate still gives 5 years warranty. if u'r computer is old one go for ATA drives not SATA ones. those are not compatible with your old PC ( PIII and PIV earlier ones)

Even though new formats are coming to the market, the cost for the first six to eight months will be prohibitively high. Does it really makes sense to wait that long?

Buy a Seagate PATA(non SATA) hard drive. SATA is not there yet. Its still in its nascent stage.

I know of a few people who have done this. They work fine. They bought external firewire equipped enclosures.

A samsung is no good compared to a seagate. Try to buy a seagate.

160GB SATA HDD costs less than 5000rs, go for that. SATA means serial ATA which means blazing performance

As for DVD look for region free. If you cant get that get the ASUS one, its easily firmware hackable.

Its not yet blazing. The current generation of SATA drives have very low or marginal performance gains compared to ATA. Its the future of ATA but we are not there yet

MY 1.5 year old SATA disk gives much better performance than my 2 year old ATA disk. Most reviews I found showed higher data transfer rates. But one thing I loved about my SATA was I could finally get rid of lot of wire clutter inside my box, a boon if you want extra case fans

Clutter wise, i agree that SATA is a good choice, but performance wise, i still think its not as good.
