On just this note:

I just got my three year old a Micromax Funbook Infinity P275 7" tablet for her third birthday a few days ago. It runs ICS 4.0.4 OTB.

It is decently featured for movies and games for kids that age, and has WiFi but no SIM support or BT. These last are no loss, as they are not needed.

The LCD screen is decent, but has a somewhat washed out appearance from the backlighting.

The build is pretty sturdy.

By far the best thing about is is the price, though: 4650 with free delivery from FlipKart.

She is loving it, and my problem now is prying it out of her hands occasionally to give her eyes a rest.

+1. At that price point, the P275 is indeed a good buy.

If you are into rooting and playing around with the tab, there is decent support avilable at different forums like XDA, Gizmolord etc. I am waiting for the (hopefully stable) Cyanogenmod 10 based ROM with JB to upgrade my tab from ICS to JB.

OT: The best deal i could find for it is from The Mobile Store - INR 4499, plus 8 GB Memory Card Free.

Re: The Quintessential Tablet PC Thread (Android, Apple, BB et al)

I am planning to buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab2 P3110 (wifi only) tablet. It would be used mostly at home on the wifi network for browsing the net and watching youtube videos or during travel for watching stored videos or playing games.

I have selected the wifi only model because of budget constraint. Also, my usage pattern does not require 2G/3G connectivity in the tablet.

Now my query - if at all I need to connect this tablet to the internet where wifi network is not available, what are my options ?
1. Can I connect a 3G/4G dongle to this tablet using USB port ?
2. Can I connect a 3G enabled smartphone to this tablet using USB port ?
3. Use wifi tethering on a 3G enabled smartphone and connect tablet using wifi.

Re: The Quintessential Tablet PC Thread (Android, Apple, BB et al)

Got my self a 10 inch Chinese made tablet recently. 8490 was the price. Supports Google play store, works on a 3G dongle from any of the operators. The screen is capacitive touch screen and fast (1.2 GHz). There is 4 GB memory built in and expandable using memory card. Over all, very good value for money at that price point. Of course, you cannot expect a Galaxy or a iPad like performance at that price point. There are not any other 10 inch options at that price point in the market.

Its called TouchTab/MID. I got it online from FabMart. The product is good, but do not expect wonders like a Galaxy: Good screen, good resolution, decent battery

The third is the best option I would say. Works like a charm in most cases and for almost all scenarios. I have seen folks work on this mode too.

Correction. The Chinese tab has Good screen, resolution and decent battery, but not the same quality as a Samsung Galaxy. I guess thats obvious!

Are the popular tabs available in open market, apart from Ipad and Galaxy tab.
I would love to check the tab in person, before purchasing it.

You could also check Micromax P 500. Good one but the supply is really constrained and is worse than the Micromax A 110. A few sites have it listed though

I am SO sorry for the delay in replying.
But, I was really tied up with my planned shift to Pune
It's all done now- and I shall be in Pune, soon!

That all aside-

FLAME is an awesome tablet for its price! seriously. (last week I checked it was at 9K!)
Specs are awesome --Dual Core A9+MALI 400 dual core graphic+16GB+5000 MAh
- I also was considering iberry Core2X Vs Flame
iberry has the 3G sim slot + 8 GB storage + 4000 mAh batt

the trade off for me was more screen time (particularly) wrt watching movies & some casual reading on the go.

regarding the issues known/observed -

1. Heat - people say it becomes "hot" - I have only experienced it becoming "warm" which is VERY normal for our high speed processor + graphic candy gadgets, I guess! nothing unmanageable.
--Not an issue--

2. Mosquito noise- (at brightness levels less that Maximum & more than the minimum) fortunately for me, I didn't notice that issue on my Flame But, even if you have it, there are firmwares that are fixing it, or making it almost live-able(at the least). I have a TM screen (that's a type in Flames, I think all latest supplied ones are TM)
--No problem for me, but partially/fully solvable otherwise--

3. Pop sound - (like a small distubing pop-on wakeup, or launching an app or putting to sleep, anything!) seems like some mismatch in the kernel/hardware interface.
Again - the newer firmware ( particularly 0115 Feiyu ) fixed it for good - for me.
Many have same opinion.
--Fix is available--

4. Overall - I give it 8.5/10
Battery lasts really really well - once you are done with few charging/discharging cycles.
I run games+download like 500MB sized games over wifi (in background), with some light sketching, sudoku + watch movies off my 1TB HDD
and it runs almost 5-7 hours easy (continuous rigorous run time on performance mode)
I charge it alternate days with typical+gaming use (doing it for past one week)

If you have waited till now -
a newer options I see with Ainol is the 9inch tablet!
IT HAS A RETINA display!
Check it out!
seems like REALLY the best deal in Ainol tabs.

Thanks,

Happy to help

Again, sorry for the delay.

Re: The Quintessential Tablet PC Thread (Android, Apple, BB et al)

I bought Karbonn cosmic Tab 10 for Rs.9900 from Ebay. Only downside is that I had to purchase a 32 GB SD card since the internal storage is quite low. Otherwise excellent with a decent battery and very good screen.

At the cost of sounding repetitive, Playbook is still the best spec tablet at that price point. Show me another tab with same (forget better!) specs at 15k!

They pulled the first coup by officially allowing Android side loading. And now with OS10 coming its even more VFM!
