Dilemma

Hi,

My budget is Rs 3 lakh. Should I go for a new Alto or 2nd hand Santro with CNG?

I'll be driving around 50 km a day within the city.

How much should I pay for a 2nd hand Santro (max 4 yr old)?

How much more expensive will it be to drive the Alto than the CNG Santro?

Which is the better option?

Please help

IMHO, you should go in for a second hand Indica.

Hi,

IMHO i would say get for a new car. A new Alto will sure cost less as the car will be new and the problems will less compared to car which is 4 years old.

And Alto do give a good FE too. Alto will cost you rs 2.5 per km. Though as rayden says indica will suite you more as your traveling is 50 KM per day.

I recently got the Alto LXi and am pretty happy with it. Is gives better fuel efficiency due to its smaller engine and optimum gearing.

Go for the ALTO LXi blindfolded. It is awesome.

Dude,

That's what I've been waiting for (since Feb), but it's nowhere on the horizon.

I need to buy a car within a month.

wrong.
this not the correct way of calculating running costs. i.e. you just can't get it by dividing the petrol cost by KMs. you have to take many a things in account like maintenance and other consumables. moreover, manas80 is in delhi where petrol costs 46.84 rupees a litre and Alto gives about 14kmpl in city, so even as per your calculations, the per km cost of alto comes to 3.35 and not 2.50 as mentioned by you!
now, add some other costs too and then only you can derive the running costs!

but still i agree, Alto is very much fuel efficient car and is a very nice city car for first buyers.
and is no doubt, much better than the option of second hand santro with CNG/LPG.

very true.
for 50km of daily running, one should opt for diesel cars and not petrol until and unless he hates them!
and indica is a very good diesel car!

manas80, if you can increase your budget then you should have a look at recently launched WagonR-LPG, as it is a factory-fitted-kit, it will be among the safest ones!

1: If i go for alto, i intend to convert it to LPG/CNG the day the warranty ends.

2: My office cars are all indicas and I find their build quality sucks majorly. My cousins owned a Safari and prior to that the awful Sumo. So I'm no fan of Tata cars.

3. Everybody keeps talking about LPG WagonR but where the hell is it????? I can find no info on maruti website.

manas..
1. welcome to the gang of tata haters i have the exact same feelings like urs towards tata.

2. Wagon R or Alto... if u read the latest AUTOCAR mag, it says that there are heavy discounts on Wagon R and Zen. and i think for a lil more than hte Alto, u can buy the WagonR or Zen.

3. Compared to the Used Santro CNG and a New ALTO, if u wanna keep it for long time..say 3+ years, then go in for the new Alto. if u wanna sell it in 2 yrs or so, then go for the Used Santro.

Guys, do you mind telling me where you're getting all this info from?

I've yet to see any publicity/ads/media reports.

The Maruti website has nothing.

If you do a "WagonR LPG" search on Google, all you get is a Hindu article dated January which says that the concept was unveiled at the Auto Expo and officials "expected it to be launched sometime around June".
