Hi Ranjith

Welcome to Team-BHP.

As far as accomodating 5 people, the Santro does the job much better. The rear seat of the Wagon R being split - makes it difficult for seating the "third person." However, the option of split seats and being able to fold them individually gives you a lot of flexibility. When I had my old Santro once we had to get some goods from town. There were three of us in the car and we had to fold the rear seat to make for the goods...and I had to take an autorickshaw back home..in the Wagon R you can fold each seat individually so that 3 people + luggage can fit in.

As far as performance and mileage, IMHO, the Wagon R beats the Santro (opinions might differ). I bought the Wagon R recently after test driving the Wagon R Vxi and the Santro Xing eRLX XO (and I owned a Santro Deluxe before). Also, the Wagon R handles very well - much better than the Santro, especially in congested traffic.

Fuel efficiency - Wagon R slighty better than the Santro..or so say most of the reviews. However, if your friend lives in a city where auto-grade LPG is available, nothing like buying the Wagon R LPG. Please click here to read more about it.

5 people is a slight problem for both these cars.... (more so for the WagonR)

Try for Indica or.... Palio

Well, both WagonR and Santro, will have problems seating 3 in the rear comfortably. The Palio would be better in that respect, but then his requirement on mileage will not be met. And safety is just so-so for both cars. Again, the Palio would be a tad safer due to the solid built. So, he has to compromise on one or the other factors.
If he is not willing to compromise on the safety aspect and needs more room, he could increase the budget to get the Swift.
If not, with the available choices, I would recommend the WagonR - best FE among the three, Maruti's service network, split seats at rear etc.

If you are looking for safety go for Palio...
If you are looking for FE and After sales service go for Wagon R
If you are looking for FE, A**, good interiors: Santro

My personal opinion: Dont always go for FE.. Safety also matters and when any worst situations occrus... Its not FE that saves you but its safety... Palio is solidily built on thew very famous 178 platform.. Has the Fuel cut off feature in case of impact.. Has the feature of steering column drop in case of impact..

You will find many threads here on Palio and its rivals (Getzs, Swift, Indica).. Best of luck..

Cheers

40-100kmph( 4th gear )

Wagon R :21.8 sec
Santro( non-erlx) :23.8sec
Palio 1.2 : 30.59 sec

If you can live with this thing, go for palio..

else choose any between wagonR and santro.. both are gud.

Go blindly for Palio 1.2.
It has got Space, high Safety, Mileage of 11 - 13 kmpl in City driving and now Service by Tata Motors.
But you need to stretch your budget to 4.5 lacs atleast.

If you can stretch your budget a bit then the Swift Lxi will be a better bet.A friend bought it in Trivandrum at Rs.4.35 lacs OTR.

The difference of 9 secods is bcoz of the heavy weight of the Palio and this is the thing which keeps it rock solid and stable even at 150 KMPH. WagonR is 9 secods faster due to its tin box kinda build quality... Someday test Palio 1.6 and you will get to know what is speed and torque all about..

Cheers

It wud hav been better if palio sported 1.3L mill, apart from 1.6 one

Yes very true.... 1.3 would have been a good deal . 1.2 comes with 2 valves per cylinder I wonder if making it 4 vales would solve the issue with DOHC..

Cheers

I think one of the Team-BHP members got hold of spy pics of the new wagonR to be launched sometime in August. It supposidly improves a lot on the exterior looks.
