Tata Nano GenX AMT

What you'll like:

• Cute & cool styling. A car that will make you smile
• The cheapest Automatic car in India. Priced Rs. 1.26 lakhs lower than the Alto AMT!
• AMT, light power steering & small footprint make it effortless to drive in the city
• Innovative packaging results in spacious interiors for 4 adults. Generous legroom & headroom
• Openable tail-gate & bigger fuel tank make the Nano more practical to live with
• Powerful air-conditioner will chill you to the bone
• Features such as the Bluetooth-stereo, full MID, Zest steering wheel, twin glove-boxes etc.
• 4 year warranty is standard (limited to 60,000 kms)

What you won't:

• Nano AMT has sluggish performance. Struggles on inclines too. Unsuitable for highway runs
• AMT lacks the refinement & shift-speed of conventional ATs
• Puny drum brakes feel too weak in the Automatic variant
• Basic, bumpy ride quality
• Low cost nature & quality. Cheap car image is a deterrent for many
• Tiny 94-110 liter boot
• Niggles & issues as reported by existing Nano owners
• Tata's sub-par after sales service isn't a match to Maruti's

Link to Official Review

Maruti Alto K10

What you'll like:

• A much improved Alto K10 at the same price point
• VXI AMT starts at merely Rs. 3.80 lakhs
• Power-to-weight ratio of ~90 BHP/ton makes this one peppy li'l hatchback
• AMT variant is an easy sipper @ 24.07 km/l
• Compliant low speed ride quality. Soft suspension is absorbent
• Convenient city car: Light, agile & easy to drive
• Maruti's excellent after-sales service & fuss free ownership experience

What you won't:

• Cramped rear bench. Also, the seatback is very short
• Sensitive steering & nervous handling at speed. Best driven <100 kph
• AMT lacks the refinement & shift-speed of conventional ATs
• VXI (O) trim & airbag unavailable with the AMT. No ABS on any variant
• Questionable structural strength. The car which it's based on (Alto 800) fared poorly in crash tests
• Skinny 155 mm tyres beg for an upgrade
• Flimsy build & economy grade quality. Poor NVH levels as well

Link to Official Review

Maruti Celerio

What you’ll like:

• Celerio AMT is a breeze to drive in the city
• Well-packaged cabin. Decent legroom, excellent headroom and a 235 liter boot
• K-next engine has peppy performance & good fuel economy
• Suspension offers neutral ride quality & predictable handling
• Maruti’s excellent after-sales service & wide dealer network
• Driver airbag available in the ZXi trim

What you won’t:

• ABS missing on the ZXi AMT
• VXi trim is poorly equipped
• AMT lacks the refinement & shift-speed of conventional ATs
• Flimsy build & economy-grade quality. NVH levels could be better as well
• The Celerio AMT still has an extremely long waiting period

Small correction: The Zxi variant of the Celerio AMT offers only 1 airbag and NO ABS.

The Zxi(O) variant is the one with 2 airbags and ABS,but that isnt offered for AMT.

Re: Budget Automatic War: Tata Nano vs Maruti Alto vs Maruti Celerio

Voted for the Alto K10 over the Tata Nano. Celerio seems too overpriced.
Reasons:
1. Alto K10 AMT is more fuel efficient and powerful
2. It's got a bigger boot
3. Front disc Brakes and Optional airbag in Alto K10
4. Maruti's terrific ASS and good resale value of the car

Automated Manual Transmission a.k.a AMT as a option is catching the attention of many customer due to the ease of driving plus the fuel economy it delivers at a cheaper price compared to convention AT's and high-end DSG.

Moreover with the launch of Tata's latest offering of AMT variant for the Nano to give that car some sales boost plus to get rid of the cheap car image, competition overall heats up in this segment. The AMT segment comprises of Nano, Alto K10, Celerio and Bolt. I haven't included Tata Bolt AMT and Maruti Celerio AMT due to their pricing. This is a entry-level hatchback AMT clash!

I have put down the comparison in the following parts:
  1. Pictures between the two;
  2. Features;
  3. Specifications
  4. Prices;
  5. Colour choices offered.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 :

A great family hatchback for first time buyers who need some zing and kick during the daily drive at an affordable price plus good FE and decent after sales to back it up. The Alto overall sells 20K+ units a month though it is unclear as how many K10's are sold in that but this car does sell thanks to the 'Alto' badge that it bears. With the advent of AMT variant sales do seem to be picking up slowly.

Major grouse IMO is pricing and long waiting periods.

Positives :
1) Engine displacement
2) Brakes
3) Boot space
4) After Sales service

Negatives :
1) Pricing
2) No storage space
3) Low passengers space.
4) Waiting periods.

Tata Nano GenX

India's Cheapest (read price) car currently gets another refresh and variant addition -AMT. This is going to be either the first car in a family or a car just for short errands majorly inside city limits. Thanks to short dimensions, driving this car in crowded roads is a breeze for anyone familiar. A cute-city car with all the features at a very affordable price for the masses. Only grouse seems to be with TASS! Hope they improve and give this car a boost in sales and its image.

Positives :
1) Small dimensions with good headroom
2) Clever space management and packaging
3) Pricing

Negatives :
1) Engine displacement
2) Brakes
3) Tata's after sales is still questionable.

Re: Budget Automatic War: Tata Nano vs Maruti Alto vs Maruti Celerio

I'd vote for Celerio for the better driver seat. As a sole occupant most of the time it is very important for me although Alto K10 would be more sensible buy.

Voted for the Celerio. Would not mind an Alto AMT too, but I would not touch the Nano. It's too much of a compromise at this price.

Re: Budget Automatic War: Tata Nano vs Maruti Alto vs Maruti Celerio

Voted for Nano as now this (amt+ps+decent features) is a very good package for city drives (as a secondary car). The price difference is a huge plus point and openable hatch is an icing on the cake.

Already made a booking for my cousin who was looking for a second car as his city runabout.

Re: Budget Automatic War: Tata Nano vs Maruti Alto vs Maruti Celerio

VFM rules.

Based on just that voted for the Nano. (the better driving position)
Most importantly - complete fuss-free, peace of mind, not a penny cost for 4 years.
(usually the life of a car in a typical household 3-5)

So what I pay upfront is what it will cost for 4 years (more or less). Making it maximum VFM.

Had given all the easons and even a couple of ideas of what to do with the money you save upfront here.

Re: Budget Automatic War: Tata Nano vs Maruti Alto vs Maruti Celerio

Celerio is visibly not on the same price-point as the other two. I would anticipate a slight price-correction on the Alto; MS would definitely make note of the Nano and try to make the Alto a better proposition.

Perhaps chrome-infused grills or stickers that read out "Limited"? Surprise us, Maruti Suzuki.

As the average customer, I'd pick the Alto even on the current prices for the simple brand and reality perception.

Depending on the usage,

Nano - as a second car
Celerio - as a first car.

Re: Budget Automatic War: Tata Nano vs Maruti Alto vs Maruti Celerio

IMHO, all the listed cars suit mostly to be used as a second car. A second car is mostly used for city usage. And for that purpose, I don't need an extra boot space, additional power, etc. Needless to say, I voted for Tata Nano AMT for its lesser price.

Re: Budget Automatic War: Tata Nano vs Maruti Alto vs Maruti Celerio

Somehow I believe it would be wrong to compare the Nano to the Alto K10 just because of the AMT. I think its true competitor would be the Alto 800 where the Nano offered something the A800 does not which is an AMT and hence would be a better city car.

Remove the AMT for a minute from the Nano and its true competitor would be the A800 and also the prices would be more comparable. The Alto K10 is a segment higher than the Nano...with a much larger everything..Engine, Boot, Tyres etc..
