I’m trying to help a cousins decide and he’s very confused at the moment. They’re seeking a value for money car for now. Ideally a driver’s car, and comfort for rear is secondary. Which among these is better value for money?

Hello Everyone, This is my first post on Team-bhp.

I am looking for a hatchback under 9 lakhs (all included). I have driven both Swift Zxi manual petrol and i20 Sportz manual petrol. I figured both of them to be fine by my driving condition. The dealer is offering me a considerable discount on the i20 Sportz manual trim (I'm getting this at around 9 lakhs on the road), and the swift Zxi petrol manual is coming at around 8.8 lakhs on the road. Although I learned driving long back, due to not having enough km experience behind the wheels, I'd say I'm an "intermediate level" driver. I still have to learn a lot.

Question 1 : My major concern is the service cost of the i20. I believe that Hyundai charges a premium to its customers in such matters. If yes, how much more will the cost be compared to the Swift

Question 2: If I were to have a minor incident(I assume will happen before I can be perfectly sure about my driving ). How much will the spare parts cost again compared to swift

Please help me out. Thank you!

If you intend to buy a Petrol car, I would suggest to stick to Japanese makes. they are proven and are reliable & cheaper in the long run.

On the other hand, I20 is a wonderful car. But, considering the other costs (Maintenance and repairs), i would suggest you to consider it as a second choice.
Also, the Turbo models and DI models could be less reliable in the long run.

Both are good, so, considering minor differences in maintenance costs, you can chose whichever you want.

The service cost of the i20 will be 1.25 to 1.5 times that of Swift.

The part cost in case of an accident will hardly matter as long as you have first party insurance. The general part cost for an i20 will be higher than the Swift though. How much higher, I am not sure but 1.5 times should not come as a surprise.

Between the 2, the Swift is a better driver's car and is the one I'd choose. Things would change though if the turbo petrol and diesel are brought into contention. As an overall package, the i20 is superior, especially when the price difference is negligible. The i20 after all, is a segment above the Swift.

Swift does appear like the safer(in terms of risk) option for you but as a package, the i20 is the better choice. As long as you get the maximum extended warranty and ensure proper insurance, the ownership of an i20 shouldn't be much of an issue.

Do check out the Baleno Delta/ Glanza S as well.
