You know... Swift Vdi .. would surely be good.... but if you don't have to drive around too much.... you might just want to go for the petrol zxi.

petrol is still petrol....

Fiat's A.S.S in Mumbai is quite good. No issues as far as spare parts are concerned. Shaman Auto will take care of your car pretty well. The new Palio is just a couple of days away from launch. However, it remains to be seen if the 1.6 engine will continue in the new Palio Stile. It looks quite good on the outside, but less than average on the inside.

My choice for that budget :-
1) Palio Stile 1.6 (if available)
2) Swift Vdi
3) Ford Fusion 1.6

Adventure 1.6 is a good option, but you require a nice sporty and fun to drive hatch. So I'd really keep that beast out of contention. But its possibly the best thing money can buy for 5.5 lakhs (on road-Mumbai).

Wait for a week and take a call after the new Palio is launched. The 1.6 engine is not as powerful as it used to be (thanks to euro-3 norms), but the upside is that the engine is now more fuel efficient. If you like driving on long winding roads, Palio is your car.

Hey wait a minute. There is another fun to drive car at 5 lakhs. The SAN STORM !! .Just kidding, dont even think about that one.

Palio 1.6 Sports fits your bill perfectly!
It is fun to drive, superb Ride Comfort, excellent Build Quality and Handling.
Has the best Space in the hatch segment.
Average is decent 10 - 11 Kmpl in City driving (Fair enough for a 1.6 Engine!)
And now Service by Tata Motors!
Go for it dude, I bet you will never regret!

if you are buying a new car, always go for the latest design. simple logic older design at the end of the day translate to lower market value down the line + Feel good factor (V IMP in INDIA)

if not in a hurry wait and decide!

Options are
1.Swift petrol and diesel
2.Hyundai Getz
3.Palio
4.Fusion
etc..
If you want like a sedan
1.Esteem
2.Indigo
etc..

The swift is fun to drive. The diesel will suit you only if you use the car for more than 50 kms per day.. It gives you an average mileage also(13kms). Low maintenance costs because its from MUL. The getz is a bit more comfortable and spacious but the negetive is less fuel efficiency. The fusion and palio are not better than the other two. Better go for a Swift either Petrol or Diesel

IMO The Aveo/NHC if you want a boot and Swift for sure if you dont, considering Maruti's legendary A.S.S and resale Swift is a good buy

Your Priorities match exactly witht the Ford Fusion. It has loads of space. Its new technology. Its fun to drive. It gives decent mileage of 12-14km/l. And its value for money too. The only thing i would say against it is its a little shaky on bad roads. The Engine is Superb. I'd advice you to also look at the Fiesta 1.6. THough i have not driven it, really feel it should ROCK with that powerful engine. Just check it out.

What is "new technology" in fusion. Could you please shed some light on it.

i dont think the 1.6 petrol could be called an old technology one. also i thought the small but useful features like welcome lights, intellegent back wipers, cable operated gears(to avoid vibrations), Interval selectable front wipers, Distance to empty meter etc. could be called OLD TECHNOLOGY.

DO you want more? THough old technlogy these are still being used in all good cars.
  • Side door intrusion beams
  • Collapsible steering column
  • Anti-submarine seats
  • Day-night inside rear view mirror
  • Front & rear fog lamps
  • 3-point front & rear seat belts
  • Child safety locks on rear doors
  • Door ajar warning
  • Low fuel warning
  • High mounted stop lamps
  • Fuel cut-off inertia switch

Hey Gemi... Volume of piston does not define technology. Other "new technologies" you mentioned ..take them with pinch of salt. Every new car is coming with one or two new small gizmo or gadget. its difficult to say its new technology.
I would wait for something like fuel cell in fusion to call it "new technology".
Though thanks for information on those features in fusion.
