Safe, reliable & fuss-free car for 12 lakhs?

Asking on behalf of a friend.

An older gentleman currently using a 2014 Wagon R requires an upgrade with a budget of 10-12L (flexible). The car will be mostly used in the city but occasional highway trips as well. Main criteria are

1. Safety, ideally with six airbags
2. Easy to drive
3. Fuss free and cheap ownership and after sales experience.
4. Reliable

The Wagon R is absolutely top class when it comes to 2, 3 and 4 above so the bar is high. Thank you for your suggestions!

re: Safe, reliable & fuss-free car for 12 lakhs?

Would suggest the following cars looking at his budget:
1. Yaris
2. Wrv
3. Vitara Brezza
4. Magnite
5. Jazz
6. Amaze

I'm not sure about the after sales service of the Magnite but since it's a Japanese product, I'm guessing it's as reliable as a Maruti/Toyota.

Hope this helps.

Do check the Tata Nexon or Mahindra XUV 3OO.

Yaris is maybe the only car that satisfies all the above conditions. Not a lot of choice if you need 6 airbags within 12 lakh.

re: Safe, reliable & fuss-free car for 12 lakhs?

Would like to understand the word "upgrade" from his perspective. Secondly the reason why is he selling his current car if he is happy with it.

Is he looking for performance upgrade or just safety upgrade? Asking this because, if he is happy with WagonR with respect to 2,3 and 4 points, I assume he is only looking to upgrade only safety aspects.

If you can get clarity on the above aspects, probably we can filter the spectrum to suggest a better car to meet his needs.

Venue or Sonet with 6 airbags is the best option. He may have to stretch a bit for pricing, but there is nothing other than these that can be recommended to a WagonR owner. Nexon and XUV comes with gremlins of Tata and M&M ownership. Other option is Yaris, but it is an unpopular car. Buying an unpopular car is risky even if it is from Toyota. For a senior citizen, it is better to have a popular car with good service experience. I would prefer Venue over sonet in this case.

Current vehicle has done well over 1 lakh km and simply feels dated so it's time for an upgrade. He's looking for a similar ownership experience as before but from a higher segment. Safety was never a priority when he last purchased a car but he is more aware of it now. Hope that clarifies.

Thanks for the replies - will send this link over and hopefully it helps him decide.

5th gen City V model. Proper upgrade from Wagon R in terms of interior space, and the base version itself is quite loaded with 4 airbags, HLA, VSM, ESP and traction control.

Its pricey, but the XUV300 is a truly premium crossover. Your friend should definitely keep it as top contender along with the Tata Nexon. In terms of driving experience too, both these crossovers will be a major upgrade over the utilitarian WagonR.

Ecosport. It’s safe, reliable, ownership costs is less and 6 air bag variant is available. Price will be slightly more than 12L

Based on your comments, i suggest to go with i20.
Its a pep car, having 6 airbags and other three points (2,3 and 4) can be easily ticked.

I would disagree with you. Hyundai seems to have lost that reliability and cheap and fuss-free ownership tag. There are soo many examples on this forum itself. They are nowhere close to Maruti/Toyota when it comes to reliability and peaceful ownership.

Crossovers would generally work better if the ease of getting in / out is important. Low slung sedans or hatches would be difficult to get into or out of. With an elderly gentleman and mostly city usage, this may be an important consideration.

Coming from the 2014 WagonR, IMHO the XUV300 might feel too wide to the older gentleman.
I drive my Dad's WagonR(2016) and based on that I can recommend the following, definitely take a TD:
  • S-Cross : I have a feeling this might win again
  • Nexon : quite capable, worth a TD

Your requirements point to this thread (CVT Automatic car for dad - Honda Jazz vs Toyota Yaris).
Hope it helps.

PS : Do let us know if the S-Cross wins, even more so if its a white one, I am calling it our Transformer

Re: Safe, reliable & fuss-free car for 12 lakhs?

If the 6 airbags criteria can be compromised, without compromising on safety.

I would recommend the Vitara Brezza for an ex-WagonR owner who is past his middle age.
Maybe Scross too.

Also the Yaris would be a good choice.
WRV too.

All this without heeding to running cost(mileage) and FTD nature.
Otherwise would have recommended the XUV300, Magnite turbo CVT (since it has scored 4stars in ASEANCAP) et al, but they don't fullfill all the points.
