Alto LX 2007 Feb model - Is it a good buy?

Hiya Big Boarders..

A friend of mine is looking at going the 2nd hand route as he is not very comfortable with driving.

Checked out an Alto Feb 2007 base model with him..

As I was the "expert" - all thanks to T-Bhp I was graciously invited..

First things first - Slotted into first.. Well it did not have a reassuring click..overall the gearing felt a little "vaue" and when I released the clutch the car was still stationary.. had to realease it all the way to get it moving..

Query - Want to know if this is acceptable Alto behaviour (as this was my first Alto) or should I warn my friend off.

Second - The owner said that it has power steering... but when going in a straight line I found the steering "play" to be more pronounced that what one would normally associate with a P/S.

Again - acceptable Alto behaviour?

So Big Boarders...do let me know your views and what would be nominal price.. for this accident free but with a few small dents/ superficial scratches (normal in Bangy traffic) 2007 car. Oh yea it has Autocop/Sony HU and speakers..

Thanks in advance

First answer: The clutch in the car was set that way. It takes around 20secs to adjust the clutch in the alto to your liking. You just have to put your hand inside the front bumper and reach the correct spot to adjust the clutch.

Second: the Alto's PS is very very light. So if by play you mean that the steering moved very easily then it's not really play but just the very light PS. takes a while to get used to it. It took me a few days to get used to it from my 800.

Make sure the car doesn't jerk with the AC on.

A good price would be somewhere around Rs.2.8L.

@ Vid - thanks for that.. Well reg the steering.. this is what I felt:

Am driving straight.. I move the steering a little to the left..car doesnt move.. keeps going straight.. If I rejig my memory.. atleast till 30-40 degrees the car did not have a perceptible change in direction...whcih I thought was not right somewhere..So I moved the steering the other way and again car was going straight..

Well this is what happeend.. if this is the light PS then am ok.. else if it is something that has to be checked..do let me know..

Car did not seem to jerk wth A/C on.. when I switched it on.. i was at 20kmph odd.. so didnt notice anyting much..

@Rj sytles.. - Indicative quote at around 2.9L What say?

Actually the steering's pretty responsive. I literally throw the car around corners and the tyres have 50% wear in 11,000kms. A very fun to drive car around corners.

Steering should not need so much movement to turn. Since you drive the spark I can't really say the difference. Maybe the spark's steering is heavier and gives a more direct feeling. The spark has a hydraulic PS whereas the Alto's is electric.

Being electric it is vague. That could be why you find it unresponsive.

I second that. The alto PS is pretty responsive. Souldn't have that much play.

As far as i know the LS version does not come with PS. It should have been fitted later. So ensure it has one, and if so ensure its perfectly fixed.

Power Steering in an LX model...???? Is it an aftermarket fit??

Please check throughly.

I got a Feb model LXi model and it has turned out to be a lemon.
Never crosses 12kmpl in city and 15kmpl on highway. ON LIGHT FOOT. 4th - 5th gear maximum time.

oh oh.. scary skulls.. you ARE beginning to scare me.. well AFAIK Alto has LX and LXi and this model didnt have power windows etc and was the LX. When i saw the steering.. I first asked him if it had PS and he said yes.. then I assumed that Alto LX came with PS. My mistake.
Thanks Junky and Scary.. have asekd my friend to check.

Alto has three models.

Alto Standard --> Bare bones car. Not even A/C.

Alto LX --> Alto Standard + A/C

Alto LXi --> Alto LX + Power Steering.

What I want you to check is the car. I fell into the trap of the owner who said that Car proved too small for his family needs.
Actually, he was simply carting off his lemon to me.

And yes, 2.8L for LX model is little high... Bargain well.
I got my LXi model with 13" League alloys + 155/65 Michelin XM1 tyres + JVC VCD player and pio speakers + Maruti security system + pseudo leather seats + GarWare sun control all around for 2.87L
