Hey!

I am looking for a car and the budget is about 5 Lacs. What do you guys advice? Have the Getz, Sail, Flair and Esteem in mind.... not to forget the santro and the wagon R.... dunno if anything else would fit in this budget.

hmmmm... First of all safety. And it should be well build 'coz it'd be driven on stretches that go by the name of roads in south Bangalore (For Bangaloreans... bannerghatta road is an exmple). Fuel economy is a consideration but not a decider and performance.... yessss sir!! Space is not that big an issue but won't mind it if I can afford it.

I am willing to consider a good used one too......

Getz is too new and too over hyped. Wait for a couple of months and then lets see where it is.
Sail is a good car. Good safety and build quality but high maintainence and exells in nothing except ride quality.
Esteem - safety and build quality?
Wagon R & santro - safety, build quality & performance?

From ur requirements from ur car i feel the fiat petra 1.6 petrol will satisfy you completely. Amazing that you didn't even consider it isnt it?

I think that you would need a moon buggy

Nah...... saw one at Kenneddy space center and is not my kind of car! I prefer mine with doors ;-)

On a more serious note, I thought of a Fiat but have heard horror stories about their service network... Some one I know had to leave the car in the service center for 4 days for a routine service! How has the experience been with you guys?

though i dont have first hand experience, i have friends in bangalore who own a palio and they have had a bad experience *with sundaram motors(the only Fiat dealer in the city).
but otherwise the petra seems to be right for your needs.

u can get the base getz in your budget .or if you cud stretch a little more u cud get the getz GLS which will not have an ABS or alloy wheels, still its great VFM with its 1.3l engine.
once u drive it ,u will start feeling all other cars like the zen, wagon r,xing ,palio as outdated.also its got 175/70r13 tires.so u only need to get alloy rims.
the only difference between the GLS and the GLSw/ABS is alloy wheels and ABS.
so i vote for the getz.
also the crdi is some months away.so at present its the getz.

i vote for fiat petra - it has everything u are looking for
service in mumbai is quite good though....
next up would be ikon and indigo

do not consider a small car like santro and never consider esteem ( it doesnot even know the meaning of safety )

the getz is a new launch and u shd wait some time until it is proven to b a good car...
the sail just not worth it.
the palio is way better in everything...

my choice - petra
ikon / indigo
getz ( wait and see . i may be wrong ) / palio

do keep us updated

By the way, you mentioned FE - petra does score a low there - you can expect less than 10(around 8kmpl) in city traffic from what i have heard.
petra owners, any feedback about its FE?

One word : Petra!! Its got superb ride quality, a delicious engine and that typically European sturdy build.

Go for it, dont worry about the three extra days for a service. Has to be a one off.

Just got off the phone with sundaram ...petra petrol is 5.54L on road and no discount.... If I am not wrong fiat was offering discounts earlier... I remember people getting full music systems with CD changers etc as complimentory in Pune.

Will try to go there over the weekend and check the car out!

The price cut has in effect "officialised" the discounts. Its a steal (though 30K + more than Bombay)

Go for it

My expereince with Fiat service so far has been damn good. Right from day one i have been getting extremely good service from Anuroop here in Mumbai. You can read about my expereince with fiat service here
Don't worry about the 4 days for routine service. I guess it's a one off problem. Go for Petra.
