Hi,

I am posting this on behalf of my friend. She wants a a car in a budget of about 1.75 - 2.5 lakhs. This will be her first car. She wants something out of the ordinary and funky rather than the normal boring rides. How about the Palio S10? Is it good? How will the maintainence costs be with respect to parts and repairs? How much would a 2 year or 3 year old Palio S10 cost approx in Chennai? Are there any other cars we could look at in this price range? The car would be self-driven most of the time. She is against the zen, wagon-r options. Come up with suggestions guys.

2003 palio 1.6 would be in the region of 1.60L, but it is a very serious matter looking for an used palio. Lot of beat up old cars are with the dealers with special offers, so beware.

To begin with, buy the car directly from the owner(look up the classifieds). Even better if you know the owner. For a first, used car, I would stick to the Maruti/Hyundai range. In my opinion, they take abuse better, are cheaper to fix, and parts are easily available.

How about a contessa. Would be a lot cheaper as well provided you manage to find one.

go in for Palio 2003 onwards approx cost will be 70K - 1.50lac

But for First timers I still suggest an Alto its very good for learners

This would be her first ride buddy, a Contessa would be too much to negotiate in city traffic. I too would suggest an alto.

I would Recommend her a Honda City 1.5 if available

Not in chennai.

Alto is the best bet for her.

Isn't the S10 a pretty rare car? It might a bit difficult to find one thats on sale. But thats one cool car. Also being a huge Tendulkar fan, I cant take my eyes off one when i see it. Go for it if you can find a good one.

S10 would be a difficult find. Owners dont sell it easily. Market rates in NCR, for Palio 1.6 is around 1.5L , OHC 1.3/1.5/Vtec is between 2L - 3.5L. You could get her a Baleno infact as they are going very cheap now! Last i checked there was a 2006 Baleno LXI done around 16K was going for 2.9L @ Maruti True value.

How are the spares for the baleno?
Are they cheap and readily available?

How about the S10?Will we be able to get spares easily for a 2 or 3year old car easily? How expensive is its maintainance?

Contessa was a suggestion because she wants something out of the ordinary and funky and not interested in small cars.

You could also try the Palio nv sport which is 1.2 and also looks good. it comes with company fitted alloys and spoiler and your friend will also able to handle the power and the car looks really cool.

@redsfx - the S10 is a limited edition that only sold 500 nos so finding one would be difficult. Also some spares for the S10 like the muffler, spoiler would be difficult to procure.
I would advise a regular Palio 1.6 GTX or even a 2000s Baleno/Lancer in that budget.
