You can also consider Petra. It is within the budget and good performance. Baleno is also a good option. One of my neighbours is boasting that his baleno is giving 18 in city with A/C.

thanks guys other than that diversion towards the FE of the NHC most comments were useful. NHC v/s Fusion it is. Fiat's service record is quite dismal so the Petra has that against it. I did not like the Getz but then it could well be that Hyundai over promoted it and we were expecting too much.

like i said FE is not a big concern as his drive is limited to twice a month to the city and twice a week local shopping. He just wants a car that is reliable, wont corrode on the beach, and has good service. I was looking at the NHC because my niecne and nephew each have one (CVT) and are very happy except that the service center is way out in the boonies. But I feel the Swift would offer better value and service.

No doubt about that. It was only the space that made me put it 2nd on the list.

I haven't driven the CVT yet but i heard, it kinda gets irritating when the the revvs don't actually rise and fall according to vehicle speed. A person, used to listening to the revvs fluctuate while shifting maynot like the way, the CVT works.

I have always felt that though Honda City is an excellent car by virtues of space, interior, refinement, it is overpriced. Dont understand the hype over its FE either. I seriously considered NHC for myself and dropped simply coz it is not cost effective. Common, it makes no sense about FE if you are paying 2.5 lakhs extra. Doesnt break even even at 1,00,000 km.

shan2nu,

thanks for the help. any other car you could recomend?

I love the CVT. it does not have the clunkiness of traditional automatics although the new autos using 2 clutches (read as honda V6) are also quite smooth. in any case my BIL cant afford the CVT.

BTW my love for the CVT might come from the fact that in my younger days (some 25-30 years ago) some friends of mine and i had designed/built an amphibious vehicle using a CVT. some of our preferences dont have a logical explanation.

i would suggest ford ikon anniversary (flair) 1.3. i bought one in nov 2004 and itsreally good and fuel efficient ( by watching the rev meter). i get around 12 in city and 18 in higway with 90% ac off. i have done around 1800 km till date. suspension in front is poor compared to indica dle(previous car). other wise pickup is very good and handling is really good. brake is poor compared to indica. instead of spending 8 lakhs on NHC, you can spend 5.2 lakhs for ikon flair and put the balance inbank and use the interest for petrol cost!!.

hey man
tell your brother to go for either a fusion or a NHC.
both re reliable, loaded and new .
the fusion looks better, is more fun to drive, more powerfull
the NHC is just more fuel efficient
tell him to check them both out

The cheapest NHC is the EXi which goes for somewhere round 7.5 lakhs approx
