Used Hatchback - Budget 1.5 - 2.0 Lakhs

My friend who lives in Bangalore wanted to buy his first car.
he is looking for a used car as he is low on budget currently and need to get used to driving through B'lore traffic.
i suggested him to go for a hatchback and his budget is at 1.5L

would like your valuable suggestions!

PS:any B'lore residents are welcome to shed some light on good second hand showrooms.

At around 1.5 L a good option would be the zen. Fun and easy to drive, good handler, small, and it's a maruti after all. Spares shouldn't be a problem.

If you stretch a bit an Alto/Old Santro should be possible.

Zen, in BLR, well in budget.

And ask him to buy it from Maruti True Value. Though 25-30k higher than market price. You get 1 year warranty and 3 free service from Maruti.

I am also in the market for a used car around 1.5L. i see Zen is one of the good cars - Zen 2001 or 2002 may also be available for 1.5L.

Alto is a good car, but very few of them seem to be around for sale.

True value gives Warranty and free service only for newer cars - i dont think they give it for a 7 or 8 year old car. They do sell it though, in which case it is as good as any other broker.

At 1.5 Lakh, look at either the Zen or Santro.

An Alto would be better in this budget, since the parts will be available for a long time from now.

The santro is still under production.I feel it should be a better option compared to the zen as its high seating and tall stance make visibility really good which might help the first time drivers.
If a performance car is desired then look at nowhere but the palio1.6 which offers maximum bang for the buck.
You might even land a esteem in that budget.

You can get a good Alto and it will be a completely hassle free buy. If your friend has the time, he can get the car directly from the owner which is cheaper than going through a middleman. It requires quite a lot of time though

Go for a Santro. Still in production and hence no issue of spare parts. Good resale value if your friend wants to sell the car within a year or two. You can buy second hand Santro car from Hyundai Advantage or say First Choice.

Maruti true value 1 year warranty or 10,000kms is on engine and gear box only or and 3 free service is limited to washing the car 250 X 3 =750.
The engine and gear box will never go wrong in any well maintained and not abused car. I feel paying 20 to 30 thousand more for true value certification on 1.5 lakh car is not worth it. Instead try to locate a good car single owner from ur friends / neighbour/ colleagues get it checked from a reputed workshop and buy.

hi guys - just to update, i bought a 2005 Alto just a few days back. This was going to be our second car, and so i wanted it to be cheap as well as fairly low cost to maintain and run. So, Alto seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

Go for a Zen from Maruti True Value. In 2008 I got a Zen Lx (2003) for me at 1.65 lakhs, with 44000 km on the odo, sold last year at 1.5 lakhs after driving another 23000 kms. Fantastic car even in todays standard, will be a good first car.

Just a suggestion. The used Palio's are quite cheap, and a well maintained one's can be had well within 1.5 lacs. The service quality is not as good as Maruti or Hyundai, but its getting better. Its a fun to drive, relatively safer and sturdier built car. However, the disclaimer is that if one gets a lemon, one can be put off the used cars for the rest of the life, because for bigger problems, one can keep running from pillar to post, and no one in the service center or in dealership, or in Fiat would care.
