While I was preparing things for traveling for Saturday morning, I realized that my insurance papers have been lost. The insurance was from Maruti Suzuki Insurance (NIC) renewed this year & valid upto Feb 5 2011.

I know probably if I approach NIC (National Insurance Company) requesting for duplicate, they'll do it in half a day & I may not be able to do that right tomorrow. Since I need to travel (KL+KA) on Saturday early morning, time is very much limited to do many things.

Also the online site for Maruti Suzuki NIC doesn't seem to be in place, though I've renewed it through online this year. The NIC website doesn't seem to like anything with respect to car insurance either. As of now, I don't remember the car insurance policy number either; I'll be able to produce the vehicle regn no, chassis & engine number with photo identification proof.

What are my options? Is it a panic situation? Any help from experts are highly appreciated.

Maybe this link will help you, did'nt have time to read through it myself - National Insurance Company Ltd. Go here and click on the Car Insurance link at the right hand bottom corner

Kannan - I've tried those options & it doesn't work. The steps that you provided opens only a FAQ on...

Salient Feature
Scope of Cover
Exclusions
General Exceptions
Basis of Sum Insured
Pricing / Premium Fixing
Basis of Indemnity

There's also another search button for which a policy number is required & I don't have that with me now.

Well, I'm not an expert in this regard, but you could call the customer care and explain the situation to them. They should email you a copy of your insurance, which you can print out and keep it with your car. (ICICI has once emailed my friend his insurance.)

I guess some amount of convincing will be needed, but then it should get the job done.

When i got my insurance renewed from these guys last year, I asked for the copy to be sent by email.
They promptly did that.

You must be able to get them to do the same.
Call them up and tell them to email it to you.

Call customer care and ask them to email softcopy or send the duplicate copy on any fax no. of yours.

long back i had faced an issue like this for my esteem, and the insurance company sent me the duplicate copy on my fax machine, Good luck :thumbs up

Thanks @Dhanushs, @BBlost & @John;
Email is a good idea, I never thought about this option since the provider is National Insurance Company (NIC) probably or I'd an absent my mind over the lost doco. I really wonder if NIC probably has even a customer care lol:

Anyway, I'll give them a call today & update this thread about the progress.

Update to show the funny state of insurance when there's a question that doesn't deal with taking a new policy, claims or renewal.

For over an hour this is the drama going on...

I call up NIC & tell them about my state & ask them if they can provide a duplicate copy. They say, Maruti handles such things & gives me a number 28X1X4XX

I call up 28X1X4XX & they say this is back office for claims & they asked me to call up the dealer through which the insurance is purchased. I said it was online; he argues with me that no one can purchase insurance through online. Then I'd to explain how I bought the car through TSM in 2006 & only after that he understands I've an used car. In between I'd to tell him about TSM & its branches in Chennai. So he asks my number & name & tells me he'll give a call.

After sometime, I give a call to this number & its engaged.

Picking up a clue as to talk with Maruti, I call up the toll free 18001800180 & they give me Chennai regional office number - 2Y2Y30YY-YY.

Now I call up 044-2Y2Y30YY-YY & explain my situation; the lady promptly ask me to go to the dealer. From my previous conversation experience, I give a short explanation that it was used car & online renewal for which she jumps with joy & asks me to contact Bangalore office - 080-4X12XX01X/1X

So I call up 080-4X12XX01X/1X & tell him my insurance is lost; he immediately answers saying I need to talk to people in Chennai. I tell him that people in Chennai have referred here. Now he's confident to tell me that any insurance bought in Chennai should be dealt there. I tell him it was renewed online. Now he's asking me whether the car is TN or KA registered. I tell him its TN registered; he wants to convince saying TN vehicles cannot be dealt in KA & I've to approach a M.A.S.S in Chennai. I tell him once again that I've lost the insurance. Only now the moron understands my requirement :Frustrati. He now gives contact to one Mr.Gautham & his number 9XXY1YY7X1.

I call up Mr.Gautham on 9XXY1YY7X1 & I get an SMS "Sorry, I'll call later"

So much on a lost insurance doco!!!

AARGEE - Where do you service your car? If it is ABT or Cars India, then approach them, they have access to the maruthi insurance. I recently insured my Zen at ABT. While I was waiting for the papers to be signed and stamped, a guy walked in and told the person I was dealing with that he lost his insurance papers. This guy asks for the car registration number and without any question, he took a printout and gave it to the customer. I would advise you to check with the dealer as you are short on time for the trip. Hope this helps.

P.S: I will try to see if the sales girl who calls me regulary for the insurane can help us out here.

Thank you sir; but the problem here is, it was renewed online & no one knows how to access this account. Everyone was eager to say "approach the dealer" until they hear that it was renewed online.

One trick I use with call centers is try and get as much info as possible from them. Then after sometime call again and knowing the process tell them to do what I want.

I find most call center handlers inexperienced, but capable of following simple orders as long as it does not violate any rules. :)
