And then there was a Perla Champagne in Linea - Fiat discontinued the color : Probably somebody told them that there was no color that goes by that name. Was a nice color though.

I think naming the colors gives a lot of color to the colors

My Xylo is Rocky Beige (sounds like a distant cousin of Rocky Balboa). A very difficult color to describe to people. I just call it a cross between Green and Grey and leave it to their imagination!

My car color is Pearl Arctic White of my DZire. Dont know what exactly that means.

Why companies do give such weird names? Just to attract customers? Or try to being stylish?

wow!! you have covered almost all colours for BMW,my additions to Audi,Merc and LR. These are the colours that came to my memory when i saw your post and most of these colours are of those in trivandrum

Nissan has some pretty straightforward names for the colors. No fuss.

• Brick red

• Sunlight orange
• Onyx black
• Pacific blue
• Blade silver

Of this, only storm white (how can a storm be white?) seems to be questionable, but rest all are understandable.

I think most of these names are self-patting marketing gimmicks which only amuses the sales and marketing folks at OEMs. Can you imagine that a haberno red color will tilt your choice to a Honda just because VW does not have the name or the shade.

Thanks to my recent paintjob exposure, I learnt that color mixes of Skoda, VW and Honda are most difficult to reproduce. Maruti, Tata and Hyundai shades are easiest to formulate.

Oh the Sparkle Blue shade(Basically, Blue Mica Pearl finish) for Hyundai i20 is quite difficult to reproduce so as to match the factory paint as it has loads of variables.

General variables in paint spraying :-
- Temp(Hotter temperature of the sheetmetal = relatively lighter color),
- How thick one coat is sprayed,
- Flash off time between coats,
- Paint spray gun tip size,
- Speed of movement of the spray gun(slow speed = thick coat, high speed= ultra thin coat, ultra high speed = misting(which is useless and counterproductive)) ,
- Surface (Plastic or Metal)(plastics tend to be static charged causing the paint pigment to move and settle a lil' differently than on sheet metal = generally leads to color shift between sheet metal and plastic/urethane bumpers) and
- Humidity (causes the color to shift lighter or darker)

Also in Mica and metallic paint finishes, the base coat has to be quick drying(the solvent quantity has to be varied and its not the same as basic blue with a clearcoat) + the quantity of mica added has to be just perfect(too less and it'll be all deep blue, too much and the color will start to go lighter)

but most painters aren't experienced or have less knowledge about mica or metallic paint spraying and tend to use the same basecoat/solvent ratio(which they use for non metallic/non mica finishes) leading to the long drying time required by the basecoat, which in turn leads to 'drowning' of the metallic flakes or mica thereby decreasing the metallic or mica effect and essentially darkening the paint! I've told Hyundai bodyshop ppl loads of times but they think noone knows better than them!! (I had gotten a few spare panels for my car painted in the same color and all of em ended up darker than the factory paint!)

Anthracite is a type of coal - no pests or pesticide here buddy

And there is no fox trotting around in foxtrot - its actually type of western dance. Seems FIAT likes to name its colors around dance numbers - as in hiphop and foxtrot.

@blackasta - you are correct, I did read the details of these colors before posting here.

Anthracite (Greek word - coal like) is one of the purest form of coal and Galapagos is a Spanish name for a volcanic island.

Mocca Anthracite & Galapagos Anthracite are type of Greyish/Blackish color VW use in their car

If some of us happen to own one of these color car and visit the local garage for minor scratch repainting, the first thing the local garage guy would ask is - sir show me your smart card, I`ll get the paint. I can imagine his expression when he read the color code as - Galapagos Anthracite

Any nice names from the spate of new launches lately? One that stood out for me was Silver Leaf on the new VW Jetta. Mind you- they also have it in Reflex Silver.

Silver Leaf indeed- begs the question- what was that guy smoking?

Perhaps some leaf which made him see some stars, silver in colour!

Force one shades:
Intense White - as in intense and brooding?
Bold black - ok
Fierce Red - must run for cover when I see this
Emphatic Grey - this shade seems more sober than emphatic
Robust Blue - so are the other shades weak?
