Re: May 2011 : Indian Car Sales Figures

*UPDATE* Volvo added to the opening post. The S60s aren't going anywhere. Predictably, no one wants a 5 kpl 304 BHP sedan priced at 43 lakhs. Too bad, because it is one heck of a car. The diesel, which was expected to bring in some volume at least, completely disappoints.

And this is after being the last entrant. What will happen when the new 3 series comes about?

Re: May 2011 : Indian Car Sales Figures

I doubt the actual car has anything to do with the sales of Volvo. The major issue to me is nobody wants to buy a car from a brand which is primarily associated, pretty strongly, with high quality buses.

In what way does the diesel disappoint? I thought it was supposed to be quite a good engine?

Quite sad, for such a great car (S60). I was expecting this to be some kind of game changer for Volvo.
Well it could be a game changer - a prompt for them to shutdown India operations!

Well, could be quite risky. All their cars are CBU, and if they stop selling those failed models here, ownership costs will skyrocket.

For pre-worshipped fanatics like us, just wait till 'em 300 BHP babies hit the used market

I haven't tested the diesel, so cannot comment. I meant to say it disappoints by NOT bringing in any sales volumes.

Yeah! I haven't seen a single new-gen Passat on the roads yet. And its surely not a car that can easily be missed.

Re: May 2011 : Indian Car Sales Figures

If this is the case with Volvo (a relatively known brand in India. Thanks to the buses), I shudder to think - What would happen to the likes of SAAB's or Subaru's if they were to enter the Indian market?

I am sure Subaru has a better brand recall than SAAB or for that matter even VOLVO (If we leave aside the commercial vehicle division). All hail WRC and the glorious days of Subaru team with Peter Sohlberg!

I think the existing brand image of Volvo works against them and not for them, as I mentioned in a previous post.

Would you want a 40lakh rupee car from a bus manufacturer????

I think starting with a clean slate, like it would be for SAAB and Subaru, would be better. For Subaru, it would be easier, as they will be able to build on their rallying heritage.

The only Subaru sold in India so far - the Forrester - was quite a sales flop. Despite being a wonderful vehicle (I've experienced a friend's Forrester first-hand), it's rallying heritage or SAAB brand did nothing to boost sales.

I am sorry, but I think you forget we got the Subaru Forrester, but it was called the Chevrolet Forrester instead.
