Tata Jan whammy

Tata indica recorded highest ever sales in January with 12,640 units sold. The sales increase primarily due to Xeta and the turbo.
Maruti 800 sold only 8,262 units.
If the alto figures are below this, Tata indica will become the largest selling car amongst all segments! Is this the demise of Suzuki leadership of more than 15 years or just a blip?

Hip-hip-hooray India!
I certainly wish and hope that a full-blooded Indian car manufacturer like Tata Motors, Mahindra, Bajaj, ... gets to rule the roost in India. It will take the best of Indian intelligence, sincere effort, continuous improvement and investment, all of which are increasing nowadays!

Would be good if that happens even if it is a blip.

Alto figures have been just below 12,500 for the past 2-3 months, so it it remains the same it would be the first time since 1984 that a non-Maruti is India's number one.

Its great that this has been achieved by an Indian company, even if it is just a temporary blip.

Good work, Tata. Now try to keep it there - sustaining the top spot really takes a lot more than a temporary blip, and THAT is what we expect from you in the long run.

Good job, Tata! I consider the Indica / Indigo / Marina to be 90% the same car...If thats the case, then they have been the combined best seller for more than a year.

Nope. The first time was reported here.

Fantastic news. Ratan Tata taking the fight to the big boys.

Anybody know what the split between petrol and diesel. I think they are relying on the diesel too much. I know the Xeta helped but by how much?

Way to go Tata! Makes us proud, very proud!

Now with the Fiat tie-up....things should hopefully get much better! Lets hope that Tata doesn't do a Maruti and start stagnating!

Way to go Tata!!!! Woweee... It has been a long time coming (not that it still has completely). The indications have been there for sometime now. Kawasaki very intelligently decided that the Bajaj can be more fruitful for them in the sub 250cc sector. Bajaj showed the world so, and how! Ditto with the Mahindras... They showed what it means to sell SUVs in the comparatively underdeveloped markets of India and then make it almost mass-market thing (when you think that SUVs are the western world phenomenons). Of course Tata has been at it for sometime now... and they are out to prove their own point.

Are you sure you are not mixing up two things, the Indigo DICOR (still has some time to come) and, the soon due out, the Indigo LWB?
