Haha. Just for fun sake, i think its DC who should sue DB producers. Its after all his job to come up with hideous designs!

I did see the movie and found it amazing that they could take that car to the next level... Of ugliness!

I also remember towards the end of the movie the car being called *censored* ugly by Tashi's friends.

Its pure publicity stunt . DB team should have taken the i20 for the background music of songs in the movie.(rattling sound)

Well on a lighter note Who bothered about the stupid car that Imran khan drives in the movie. I just laughed throughout.

But hyundai cannot sue them over this for sure. A normal person cant make out its a santro by any means unless Hyundai wants to suggest that every small box like car is a Santro!

Re: Can a car manufacturer take legal action for allegedly being made fun of?!

Hyundai can never prove any loss to the company due to DB dialogues. However, DB producers can easily prove revenue loss due to this frivolous suit if they choose to countersue afterwards.

Since the movie is already well received in metros (biggest car sale towns), hyundai would be kicking the axe by pursuing this. Nothing but harm can come for them, but maybe SRK is willing to make up that loss if they go ahead

I agree with the line in the movie. First gen Santro did look like a donkey did you-know-what to an auto rikshaw!

Interestingly, a friend of mine way back when, when he first saw the Santro, commented that the Koreans came to India to launch a car, went and did a survey of what India likes to drive/ride in, went to cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, etc etc and saw that most vehicles on the road were auto rikshaws. Hence the styling of the Santro

Someone buys the Car with his money and company gets paid, whatever he does with the Car is entirely his business. So...

That's exactly the kind of bad publicity that Hyundai people are upset about. It's no more about just any car, it's about the Santro, where it starts getting personal.

Don't think Hyundai is going to get anything out of suing Amir Khan productions. Top Gear would have been history by now if that had happened.
Couple of examples - Jeremy Clarkson called the Hyundai Accent - The Hyundai 'accident'. Also they went into the Rover showroom with a spy cam (to test drive the city Rover which was our very own Indica) - and ridiculed Rover and Tata calling the City Rover / Indica - 'the worst car ever driven'. And camper vans / caravan companies should have hired assassin squads to finish off the Top Gear crew by now!

Completely agree. I was thinking on the same lines. Mr. Clarkson and co. have a special liking for Korean and Malaysian cars, and they ridicule it so much that no one will dare to go near one of those cars. But public, and also manufacturers kind of know that these things are vastly exaggerated and done to raise the humor quotient.
Hyundai will not get anything out of this, and it will be more of bad publicity for Santro. But if this becomes a national issue, it will hugely benefit the movie

I think JC and company have a couple of things on their side, that hyundai, or aamir khan do not.
one is the fourth estate protocol, so to speak.
secondly the BBC more or less coddles the top gear franchise, owing to its phenomenal success.

If you go through what these guys have been brought in press negatively for, its mostly about statements/actions that actually have nothing to do with cars.
hey, if somebody gets mad at them that you called our cars ugly(with metaphors!!), theyll just say, theyre motoring journos/reviewers.
and you go after one journo for saying something bad about your product, i s'pose the whole fraternity will lambast your product so bad, you wont be able to sell the machinery used to make it as scrap!

Re: Can a car manufacturer take legal action for allegedly being made fun of?!

There are many forms of publicity that movie makers and car companies can resort to. What better opportunity than a popular movie which features a popular car(look alike). Thousands of people if not lakhs will follow the story for months on end and many of them who are looking around for a car, will see Delhi Belly 2-3 times and then end up buying a Santro :-)!
