Re: New Maruti 800

I think it’s the 800 CC Alto facelift. Maruti has mentioned many times that they are not working on M800 and it will be phased out completely in few years. It's already not selling in Metro cities. It looks bigger than Alto so how they will position this one below Alto?

Re: New Maruti 800

For me, it seems like a mix of the following:
1: Estilo
2: i10
3: Alto van from Japan (a modified version of our A-Star)

And so, it may not come as a replacement for 800. Rather, it may be another Estilo facelift.

But why the hood is so long? Is it the K12 engine under that?

Or it may be the new A-Star also.

Re: New Maruti 800

This definitely is not M800, and should not be the alto as well? They have a brand new alto which came last year. Zen estilo also has had a makeover and new ads. Doesn't convince me that it is a M800 replacement.

Really a great effort by MSIL after keeping a long silence on feasibility of M800.

So expect this expected gap to shorten further.

The need of the hour I better vehicle packaging that concentrates on the people than trying to salvage some older vehicle platform to save cost. Using an earlier vehicle platform might save cost at the moment for Maruti, but will back fire in the long run, since this vehicle will not accomplish something substantially different than what the Alto, K10, Estillo and i10 are doing now.

Maruti needs a Miracle here.

Re: New Maruti 800

Seems like Maruti took the Alto van from Japan, and made some modifications to its front side just like they did for new Wagon-R. Here they changed the bonnet length, head lights, top grill (added 2 chrome strips instead of the plain area), but retained the lower part of the grill.

IMO, it will replace the A-Star in India.

Re: New Maruti 800

Nope. Does not seem to be matching.

If it is really the 800 replacement they will have to price it within 2.5L on road. And that is not going to be easy.

BTW I dont think Indian market will accept a car of quality inferior to Alto. With regards to asking price Alto is an extremely good car. It rides well, handles safe, pickup is there to keep up with traffic.

It will be hard for this new 800 to compete with its bigger brother.

Re: New Maruti 800

I thought it would be labelled Cervo with a new smaller engine to compete with tata nano.

Re: New Maruti 800

Everything seems to be bigger than the current Alto: wheels, bonnet, windshield - you name it.
Got to be an A-star replacement and very unlikely to be placed below Alto.

Re: New Maruti 800

Where ever it is placed, Hope it still has the driveability, peppy ness, steering feedback, frugality, etc same as the old M800 and wish to see an improvement in the breaking and above 80kmph cruising capability.
As per the mentioned price in the post earlier, it is very tempting for the first time buyers.

Re: New Maruti 800

The "new 800" will use the exsting Alto platform. This platform as it is is fully amortized for Maruti and the savings will be tremendous.
All external panels will be reskinned / new - likely to be functional in design (read that as flat panels as possible) to keep costs low.
Wheelbase will be same as present Alto's at 2360mm - so it'll definitely be roomier than the current M-800. Maruti can also push the rear seats further back to liberate some more legroom at the expense of a little less luggage space.
To keep costs down - massive parts sharing between Alto 800cc and this upcoming product. Vendors undoubtedly will be squeezed till the last drop of their pricing blood flows down the drain !
Engine too will be a carryover , the new 800 will use the current F8D 796cc, triple , but in a higher state of tune to meet emission norms.
Wheels and tyres also will be Alto carryover's. Simple suspension with struts in front and rigid axle / coil springs rear.
And why not call it the 800? Rather than spend millions to build another brand like Cervo . The M-800 brand is perhaps one of the strongest in our country and even today there are millions of folks out there who will swear by the 800!
Am sure Maruti will price this lesser by Rs 30 odd thousand than the base ALTO - thus expect pricing in the Rs 190,000-Rs 200,000 price band.

Tata had better pull up their socks. The Diesel Nano with EPS cannot come a day sooner. And let's not forget Hyundai's HA-800 lurking round the corner. Grapevine says its good and looks like a mini i-10 - which it is , will be no bad thing.

Looks like the war in the 800cc club is hotting up !

It is the A-Star itself; A-Star in India is Alto to the world. The one in the pic may be a latest one with a minor face lift.

BtB, why is the picture like a mirror image?

Re: New Maruti 800

see if i were leading Maruti there are two things that I would havr in my wish list. This might be one of it
1. A 800 cc K series engine or
2. A 800 cc diesel engine.
Unless if its one of these two I dont think Indian customers will lap up just because its cheap.

Re: New Maruti 800

Maruti has a unique position in India. It was is and must be the 'middle class' car maker here.
By targeting the changing aspiration of the growing middle class they have come out on top.
A seven seat crossover or SUV under 10lacs would be where the current middle class money would be and that too in diesel flavor.

Another model below the Alto is great but then is that what great car makers do?
