Ford says “Namaste Gujarat"! Announces Manufacturing and Engine plant in GJ

Hats off to Gujarat for its pro-industry policies & pro-active administration. Something that States like MH can well learn from. Congrats to Ford & to GJ.

High Points

- Ford announced today that it will build an integrated manufacturing facility comprising of a state-of-the-art vehicle manufacturing facility and an engine plant in Sanand, Gujarat. Representatives from Ford and the State of Gujarat signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

- Ford will invest approximately 4,000 crore in the two facilities, which include stamping, body, paint and assembly operations for vehicle manufacturing, as well as machining and assembly operations for engine manufacturing. The vehicle manufacturing plant will have an initial annual capacity of 240,000 units, and the engine plant will have an initial annual capacity of 270,000 engines. Ford’s investment will also create 5,000 jobs at the new facilities.

- The proposed site is of a 460-acre size.

- The Gujarat state government has prioritised land adjacent to the site for Ford's suppliers.

- Gujarat's pro-business environment, infrastructure and access to ports were contributors to Ford's final decision.

- Construction of both plants will begin later this year, with the first vehicle and engine scheduled to come off the line in 2014. In 2010, Ford announced it would bring eight new vehicles to India by mid-decade. Ford currently has a vehicle manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu and is expanding its engine plant there.

The biggest boon in GJ for automobile companies is Rajkot's Parts Industry. They are cost effective & agile in adopting different business requirements.

Hats off to Gujarat for bringing another car manufacturer to their land. Isn't it the same place where Tatas are already there and Maruti is planning is put one plant there.

So apart from Ford I guess Tata, Maruti, GM are there in Gujarat, anyone else I am missing?

Alas, if wishes were horses. As I can see currently, the state of WB's automobile sector is best described by the state of Hindustan Motors.

The only silver lining is that it can't be worse than this - so the only way (if there is one) is up.

By the way, the Ford Gujarat news is also on BBC -

Mr Modi is most dynamic leader with good business sense. Most of our politicians are driven by Bureaucrats, but in Gujarat its reverse situation.

My key question is - how much of it is a Vibrant Gujarat style announcement and how practical is it. Simply because Gujarat is fantastic, granted (I LOVE the state and respect NM for his policies) - but i've seen far too many announcements over the years with much much slower realization!

Re: Ford says “Namaste Gujarat"! Announces Manufacturing and Engine plant in GJ

According to news coming in local dailies following manufacturers are eying Gujarat:

Peugeot - Have not finalized their plans yet and are negotiating with State Government, though some reports suggests that they have confirmed Tamilnadu.

Maruti - not finalized
Gujarat clears 500 acre for first Maruti plant outside Haryana

Hyundai - not finalized
Hyundai evinces interest in setting up plant in Gujarat - Economic Times

Hero Honda - not finalized
Hero Honda to vroom in Gujarat; may set up unit in Sanand - The Economic Times

Ford - Confirmed

Narendra Modi's vision in giving huge concessions to Tata must be appreciated. Presence of TATA along with supplier base near Sanand and in Rajkot has brought Gujarat to the forefront of Auto Industry.

So, can we aptly name Gujarat as the "New Detroit of India" ? and Mr. NM as the best politico-Businessman of the year ?

Kudos to his leadership and I always end up thinking, what if we have such a dynamic and stubborn PM ? imagine the growth story we will see.. alas, if Raja can get into cabinet, then why not NM be the PM ?

Detroit is a city and Gujarat is a state - so comparisons are unfair. If any city has to come close then I believe that it's Madras that still holds the sway over other cities in India with respect to automobile manufacturers.

The following auto plants are Madras-based -

Hyundai Motor Company :: About Hyundai Motor India Ltd.

Ford India - Contact Us

Chennai Car Plant (CCP) - Thiruvallur*

Automotive Manufacturing Plant | Automotive Assembly Plant

http://www.nissan.in/en/web/nscuploa...oter_11541.htm

Renault Customer Service Centre, Renault Car Service Centre, Renault Car Service Centers in India.

http://www.tafe.com/company_profile.html

Not sure, but I may have missed out some others.

Apart from the above, you also have the huge Integrated Coach Factory (Railway works) at Perambur in Madras. All this says a lot about the existing auto-economy of the southern city. And if you consider the number of people associated with this auto-engineering economy, then I believe Madras far exceeds Detroit.

The other Indian city that I think comes close is Poona with Tata, Bajaj, Kinetic (now Mahindra), etc.
