Hi I just wanted to know? Has anyone done this before or if you have any info that would be great.

What is the duty structure, what do you have to prove and can you bring anything you like?

Thanks

I'm not completely sure but its something like no duty but you have to prove that you owned the car for something like 2 years or so abroad.

Are you sure about the 2 yrs?

And if so whats the way around it ;)

cuz if you look at it within customs there always seems to be a way around it?

Ok I sort of found the Ans here..

# Q.9 I am Canadian citizen. I would like to bring a new car to India. Furthermore, I would like to know that how much is the custom duty on a BRAND NEW car?

# A.9 Tthe total Customs duty incidence on cars comes to around 181%. The car can only be imported, if you are transferring residence into India and the engine capacity is less than 1600 cc (for new cars), there is no cc limit for old and used cars, in your possession for more than 1 year

Ok Now the Q is..the car has to be in possesion for 1 year..what if I buy a used car which is like about a year old and then all i have to prove is..that its in my possesion..do you think thats difficult?

You may want to try this link - I'm not sure how up-to-date this is, but it should give you an idea. Its put up by an IRS officer in Cochin.

Thanks, how do you think the indian customs check if the car has been in your posession for atleast a year? Title? Registration? What is it?

and none of these websites stated if it could be a LHD(then i wouldnt have to go through the trouble of conversion?)

Bumping a very old thread.

My brother is returning to India from Saudi (Jeddah). I wondering if it would be viable to get a 4X4 from there, like a quad. Would a quad also attract 181% tax like cars? Also, other than electronic goods and yellow metal, what are other things which would ideal to get from there?

Notes:
He has been there for 4 years now, however, anything to be bought has to be bought new our pre-owned.
Shipping is paid by the company.

Saudi Arabia has left hand drive cars, right? At least in Maharashtra you can no longer register a left hand drive car.

Importing your car is one thing, getting it registered in RTO is another bigger pain, there is thing called the Homologation by the ARAI in between. Is someone ready to go through all that ?

1 Day, as far as I know you can bring vehicles which are four years old and has been in your possession for atleast a year without import duty if can produce proof of transfer residence. Like invidious mentioned some states in India don't allow registration of LHD vehicles. CARFAX report would help determine the length of ownership of the vehicle of the most recent owner.
Off topic: From the pictures of your GTR, its look like it was taken in Seattle WA, however your Location shows Chicago IL. Just wondered
