re: Hyundai EON Now Launched! Prices between 2.7L - 3.71L Ex-Delhi!

The Eon could probably have the best BHP for an 800 CC car in India. The Maruti 800 has some 37bhp, the Alto has 47bhp and the Matiz had 52 bhp.

Just checked up with a friend at one Hyundai dealer here in Goa and the first batch of Eons are expected in the first week of October. Some bookings had already started in early September.

In naming the car 'Eon', I wonder if Hyundai has ended its i-names (i10, i20, etc). Else, it would have been nice if the Eon had been named i5 as a little sibling in the i-family. Unless of course, Hyundai doesn't want the the i5 name, fearing that it could be linked to a computer processor!

The car will sell well because of its style, and may eat into Santro, i10 and Alto's pie as well. But don't expect too much from that 3-cylinder engine. It's not a new technology engine, but an engine derived from the Santro's engine by removing one cylinder. So it will be in line with Alto F8 engine, and will never be in the leagues of Suzuki's K-10 engine.

BMW outsmarted Hyundai and has the right to use the i1 - i9 range of names. Hyundai can't use it anywhere in the world.

In my opinion, those cars likely to be challenged by the Eon include...

* Nano
* Alto 800
* Alto K10
* Maruti 800
* Spark
* Santro
* Wagon-R
* Indica (petrol)
* Estilo
* A-Star

Then, I wonder why Hyundai even thought of introducing the i-names in its line-up in the first place. Hyundai could easily have worked out a unique naming series in line with its common theme (hexagonal front, etc).

In my opinion, Hyundai should have planned a India-specific name since this is an India-specific car. The word 'Eon' could be mispronounced as "ay-on" instead of "ee-on". Notice how Honda takes pains (in its print advertisement) to inform readers and customers that the Brio is pronounced "Br-ee-o" to make sure it is not pronounced as "Br-eye-o". Somehow, I like the word "Nano" as it is easy to pronounce and it aptly refers to the Tata mini hatch. Or is it a HATCH? Especially since there is no 5th (boot) door on the Nano.

I've excluded WR because it has a completely different base of users. And excluded others because they don't have too much of a pie to eat!

Hyundai introduced i-series some 4 - 5 years ago, but BMW registered the i1 - i9 range just last year only.

Even if you exclude the Wagon-R, August sales seem to suggest that there were about 37,564 customers for the Ato 800/K10 (23170), Spark (1297), Santro (6955), M800 (1813), Estilo (1527), A-Star (1600) and Nano (1202). All these 37,564 customers are potential buyers for the Eon. Exclude the Alto (for the sake of numbers) and you still have a sizeable 14,394 from among the other above mentioned cars. So, quite a lot of pie to eat.

Besides, Eon could also establish itself as a reliable and practical second car for the household.

Read my first post in this page - I have mentioned santro, i10 and alto in my list. So, it's a combined number of only 7500 for the other 5 in this list.

Eon is cute!!
A little over a decade in India, and Hyundai is showing outstanding commitment by redefining the segment benchmarks through cars like i10/20, verna fluidic and now the eon.

Others seem to be slow in comparison!

Wow! looks waaay better than i10. It might cannibalise i10 (lower version) sales, too. And looks like this would threaten Alto's domain. Alto looks too bland in comparison.

Hyundai will be hitting Maruti where it hurts the most with Eon. I wonder if Hyundai really need to continue producing Santro - Most going for a Santro will go for Eon now.

Yes, they are. I notice a difference in the steering wheel. I think the higher variants are getting the 120/Fluidic'ish steering wheels.
