Re: Refreshed TATA Grande (SUMO badge vanished)

I'm pretty sure that the Grande is also available with the 2.0L TCIC engine from the Sumo. I have the brochure for the Grande Turbo The pricing is on par with the Bolero for that model. For the price of a Bolero, you get a more refined and powerful drivetrain, more modern mechanicals and a much better ride. Wonder how the performance would be, though.

Tata used to lead the pack when it came to indigenous R&D. Now they've allowed Mahindra to take over. They're using common-rail tech left right and center on all their diesel motors big and small, and Tata is still sticking with IDI for its lower cost offerings.

The trouble with the Grande when it was launched was that there was no cheap, underpowered, magically efficient variant for the taxi market. 120 bhp was overkill for them, and screwed up the FE.

Then again, this is the story of Tata. They make all their vehicles ride well and handle bad. Even the supposedly sporty variants. If someone at Tata is listening, please offer a sports suspension package as an option with all the models, and see the sales take an upswing. Oh, and while you're about it, replace the entire quality team with a lot that actually knows what quality means.

Hey all,

How about TATA relaunching 5 seater mini grande (like mini xylo) with CR4 engine. The market is expecting many 5 seater mini SUVs, and grande make much better case than xylo in mini SUV segment. Anyway grande shares same story as xylo, company invested much and had high hope with product but it is under-performing. So this could bring in some good numbers provided they improve interior quality and drop the price to right point.

Re: Refreshed TATA Grande (SUMO badge vanished)

Changing logo's, sticking fancy bodyside decals and blacking out a part of the rear "D"-pillar will not up the Grande's stake at the sales altar.

The initial, Grande Mk-1 sob stories are well, just that - made the owner's cry, what with intercoolers kissing the ground at the merest hint of a bump, to rear suspensions bottoming out even under part load, to groaning gearboxes, iffy clutches and what not.
Then, Tata Motor's determindedly stuck on with the old Sumo as well as the Grande - trying to sell both alongside each other.

This confused the customer's further , as both vehicles had similar names. When customer's stepped inside the vehicles , the smilarity was even more, steering wheel, dash etc was shared between Ole Daddy Sumo and Sonny Grande!
So customers went ahead and bought Ole Daddy Sumo as Daddy Sumo was more experienced and reliable than the untested Sonny Boy! Actually the old Sumo sales increased after Sumo Grande was launched !

So, Poor Sonny Grande languished till Momma Tata bought him a new set accessories for his clothes. Also Sonny Boy went to a UV Astrologer and he advised him to go to court, file an affidavit and change his name to Sonny Grande.

In the meantime, unbeknown to Sonny Grande, Daddy Sumo went to the nearby gym where he pumped enough iron to make him a mean machine and emerged as Daddy Sumo Gold ! "Hah", Daddy Sumo said, "..let's see who wins this race Sonny boy!"
Sonny Boy already quaking in his l'il booties meekly looked upto Daddy Sumo Gold for help but Daddy Sumo was in no mood to relent.
Daddy Sumo went to Desert Storm and did quite well, hell , he even shot a new advert showing his new found energy and enthusiasm by bounding up and down the sand dunes of some unknown desert land and doing fantastic tail-out desert slides. And the public said, "Hallelujah, we told you so, Daddy Sumo is still the greatest!"

And so the story moves on. We at Team-BHP don't know whether it will have a "Grande", happy ending , but we are watching

Spot on. The Grande looks a very much confused product. I loved the product concept, but the product itself is neither there or here.
Like the Xylo-Quanto, the Grande should have had a shortened cousin by now, but going by Tata product gestation periods, it's a case of too late.

Reducing the length will make it look very odd shaped - too tall for the length. Aesthetics, Safety (high CoG) both will be hit. They will need to then work on reducing the height too .. lots of costs :(

Re: Refreshed TATA Grande (SUMO badge vanished)

The new Grande is a much improved car IMHO. Plastics are definitely better, the fit and finish is quite tight and the overall look of the vehicle is nice. I have not seen the first iterations to compare. Only grouse I have is the overuse of the beige color, a combination of black lower and beige upper would be more classy (like the new vista). I am not sure why some members want a shortened Grande? Just because a few other manufacturers have small hatch-SUV's should everyone now jump the bandwagon? Sumo and the Grande is as is quite small lengthwise. Only wise thing Tata can do to compete in the small SUV market is to launch a revamped Serria.

IMO it will look way better than Xylo in looks department at least in my books. With Improved plastic quality and zero niggles, i am sure it will sell well .

current grande is used extensively in my office cabs and it;s one stable vehicle. With a 4 x 4 on offer and a Short wheel base, it will make for a Nice SUV.
