Re: Game Changers - Landmark events in the Indian Automotive Scene

1. Maruti 800 the biggest which anyone could beleive before it happend
2. Indica Wiped of the Amby market
3. Innova was a classic move from toyota and is still a lead player in the segment

I beleive Accent / Viva CRDI generated interest in the deisel sedan and clicked commercially as well. Becuase till than Deisel was dedicated to the MUV and Heavy vehichles.

Re: Game Changers - Landmark events in the Indian Automotive Scene

If we talk about game changers in C segment of 4 wheeler than for me it would definitely be the VW Vento as it was the first ever car to dethrone the mighty H the Honda City from the no 1 position that it held for a decade. This made the Honda to think about the pricing of its cars and we now see the reaction of Honda with so many price cuts been announced.

In 2 wheeler segment for me it would be the Kinetic Honda. The first gear less scooter in India. I own one of 1996 and it still drives like a breeze and gives a average of 34 Kmpl without a problem.

+1
Pulsar was a big game changer.
Dont forget what Hero Honda cd100 (Fill it shut it forget it ) and splendor did when the market was dominated by Yamaha and Kawasaki.

Re: Game Changers - Landmark events in the Indian Automotive Scene

Since I live in Delhi, I can only comment about scene in metros and not about cities outside metro. For metros, my vote goes to Swift.

Swift spawned a new segment (earlier attempts clearly failed). Now metro city drives around in premium hatchbacks. Families are also preferring premium hatchbacks more than sedans. Swift has also become a symbol itself like Maruti 800.

PS: Please read what the thread starter has written "over the last decade". So, Maruti 800 doesn't count.

i10 anyone?

A hatch which truly had a "Premium Feel" to it with fantastic interiors.

Clearly challenged the others to improve the interiors, quality and features.

Add the BMW 320d CE - the car which took away Merc's incumbent status as the lead actor in the luxe space.

I think Daewoo cielo was 1st car to come post liberalization, Powerful car with luxury never seen in India before. Before this just has Maruti 1000, Ambassador and Contessa. This made other manufacturers Hyundai, Ford, Honda.. to rush in.

Well the hot hatch segment was created by the Palio GTX. So that was a game changer!

Re: Game Changers - Landmark events in the Indian Automotive Scene

Hyundai I20 surely was a game changer. No one believed that we will buy a hatch priced like that. It sure changed the consumer's definition of a hatchback.

Tata Sumo ( the original one) followed by Toyota Qualis and Innova really changed the way we Indians traveled in Taxis and rental cars.

Bmw 320CE for making it possible for many more Indians to finally atleast put a BMW on there shopping list.

Re: Game Changers - Landmark events in the Indian Automotive Scene

For middle class people, it is the introduction of Tata Indica. It offered cheap mobility for the middle classes. I think the current generation of diesel hatches owe their life to the Indica.

Prior to Indica, the diesel cars were of the size of a mini lorry - Ambassador, Armada, Estate, Sierra etc. Indica changed it all. Also provided bread to many families for its part in taxi cab boom which coincided with IT/Call Centre boom.

For two-wheelers, the last game changer was the Pulsar. Even though the CBZ preceded the Pulsar, introduction of Pulsar opened up market and proved that the 150 cc bikes can have huge market.

Yes, Tata Sumo did change the way for a people mover. Qualis just followed it, it was a superior, better engineered product but the market was opened by Sumo where the Armada/ Grand failed.

I would add Dzire to the list. Mere addition of a boot without any other change and the car has dominated it's segment notwithstanding it's looks.
Tempo traveller and Volvo buses in revolutionizing the commercial segment.
