Hey Guys-
I am currently in the US and moving to India shortly.I want to get my M Class (ML 320) to India. I have heard different stories about left hand drive cars in India. Can someone pls answer these Qs

1) Are Left hand drive cars registered by RTO in India or no?
2) What is the duty if you have owned the car for last 4 years?
3) Maintainenece in India with an authorized mercedes dealer?

Any help is appreciated.

TIA

1) I dont believe so..you can only register a LHD temp, but it has to be on international plates and can stay in the country for 1 yr or so..
2) 0%
3) Expensive

option..spend 20+k usd for conversion, not worth for a car like ML

4 year ML is worth only $18K.

RHD conversion may be cheaper because you can find parts in the UK or OZ.

1: If the car has been in use by you, it can be imported and registered but please check
2: You wil need to pay 160% duty on the depreciated landed value of car inclusive of freight
3: no problem but it will cost you

My guesstimate is that it will cost you around Rs 15 lakhs to bring it in and register it. Add another 3 lakhs for rhd conversion which will hit your resale. Wipers facing the wrong way is a dead giveaway. Merc ML's not that well built and you can expect problems after a while in our harsh conditions.

Come over, put a down payment on a Tuscon/ CRV and invest the rest in our dynamic economy... you'll be much better off

Hi Skrish,

Several other threads like this exist. Please seach (maybe for the word "import") and continue the discussion there.
