High Points

- Maruti just released its Sustainability Report 2010-11. The report states that the company has significantly brought down CO2 emission per vehicle in car manufacturing. This report is prepared as per the international Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, and has an A+ rating.

- At the Gurgaon Plant, CO2 per vehicle in 2010-11 came down by 15% compared to the previous year, while in the Manesar facility, CO2 emission reduced by 13% during the year.

- This was achieved using many initiatives, including the use of Natural Gas (instead of Propane) in the manufacturing processes. The company also uses Natural Gas for power generation. The use of waste fuel of turbines to generate steam and compressed air aided in the reduction of CO2 emission per vehicle.

- A part of the hazardous waste generated at the Plants is being sent to the cement industry where it is utilized for co-processing. “Use of hazardous waste for co processing in the cement industry has eliminated the need for incineration and land filling,” the report states. The hazardous waste being sent includes paint sludge, phosphate sludge and ETP sludge. In all, 6,447 tonnes of such waste was sent for recycle/use in the cement industry in 2010-11, the first year of this initiative.

- The Company was able to bring down per vehicle water consumption by 5% (Gurgaon) and 16% (Manesar). Of the total water requirement of the company, 42% was met through recycled and reused water in 2010-11.

This is great. clap:

Good to see that our own Maruti has taken these measures towards protecting environment.

P.S: Is the reduction in emissions due to the production halts during the strikes..??

Jokes apart, a big step from Maruti towards improvement. Way to go.:thumbs up

So Maruti can definitely claim CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) benefits.

(Under the Clean Development Mechanism, emission-reduction projects in developing countries can earn certified emission reduction credits. These saleable credits can be used by industrialized countries to meet a part of their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol.)

Very uplifting to know that Maruti is advancing with clean benefits to the environment. This must have cost Maruti lots of money and time to do. Though the end customers do not realize that the company that manufactured their car is also taking initiatives to save the planet , This is something that we should be proud of! And 15% is no small task as well.

Kudos to Maruti for achieving this target :) Hope the other manufacturers also follow the same. Its very nice to learn that the hazardous byproducts are being used by the cement industry for co-processing. Feeling proud of the company!
