Kia Motors needs to set up a factory in India to tap growth there and offset slowing sales in Russia and China, the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper quoted the South Korean automaker’s chief executive as saying.
India is expected to become the world’s third largest auto market by next year, according to industry data provider IHS. Kia Motors, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Co, currently has no production in India, and high import taxes mean Kia’s India sales are also negligible.
“While growth in Russia or China is stagnating, India is where Kia will ultimately make a leap forward,” Kia CEO Park Han-woo, a former head of Hyundai Motor’s Indian unit, told the newspaper.

Ah finally, Kia is looking ahead in the right direction. Given the strong hatchback and midsize sedan lineup they have, Kia should have entered India long back. They might have cannibalized Hyundai sales a bit but it would have been an impressive overall growth story for the Hyundai-Kia group. Not to forget, our roads would have become a wee bit prettier if that Optima sedan had made it to our shores too.

True. If VW and Skoda can coexist, why can't Hyundai and Kia?

I agree. And the most important thing is Kia's cars are differentiated much more from their Hyundai siblings unlike the badge-engineered models from VW-Skoda and Renault-Nissan. Clearly, Kia wouldn't be following the "Change the headlights and grille on the outside and the logo on the steering wheel inside" approach.
But then, with no official announcements yet, nothing's for sure.
A news article at ACI Professional says that KIA might be looking at Andhra Pradesh for setting up their facility.

Currently, Hyundai has the brand power to sell cars at a premium even without loading them with features to the brim. And Hyundai has earned it. They have come a long way in quality, design and engineering. The Creta, i20 are examples of it. It is just now that i20 got some goodies to counter the Baleno.
So, Kia with a well priced mix of cars surely has the space to slot below Hyundai in the market now. A well kitted Hyundai model at a premium along with a Kia model which delivers high on value and a slightly different style can definitely coexist.

Surely looks like a peppy smart hatch.
Some dimensions of the Kia Picanto, as well a picture taken from its brochure on its storage spaces
Meanwhile how does the KIA fit in into Hyundai's India strategy? Don't quite get that, is KIA is going to be the channel for small cars only with Hyundai catering to the large hatches and above ? or both companies products are going to have parallel offerings in all segments ( like a VW and Skoda) ?

i have driven both the Cerato & Morning/Picanto frequently and also the Sorento a few time. The morning is very good car, and much better than the i10 in every way. Seems to be tuned differently and also set up more sportier than the Hyundai.
Additionally the interiors are way better that of Honda cars.
Feel Kia would definitely eat into the numbers of Honda and Toyota. And would not effect the Suzuki brand much particularly in INDIA.
