MG Windsor EV prices hiked by Rs 50,000

JSW MG Motor India has increased the prices of the Windsor EV by Rs 50,000. This not only marks the end of the introductory pricing, but also the complimentary charging offer.

The MG Windsor EV was launched in September last year. The introductory pricing was valid on the first 10,000 units. This milestone was achieved in December.

The Windsor EV is available in Excite, Exclusive and Essence variants. Prices now start at Rs 13.99 lakh, while the mid-spec and top variants cost Rs 14.99 lakh and Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively.

The Windsor EV packs a 38 kWh battery that is said to deliver a range of 332 km. It powers an electric motor with an output of 134 BHP and 200 Nm. The car has four driving modes: Eco+, Eco, Normal and Sport. It supports DC fast charging, which takes 40 minutes to charge the battery pack.

The free charging offer that was available through the MG e-hub app has also ended. It was available to customers who took delivery of their Windsor EV before December 31, 2024.

The price hike was expected but ₹50k price increase (about 4%) suddenly looks too much.

MG should have given free charge offer to first 10k bookings (like Mahindra used to provide price protection) and not first 10k deliveries as there are lot of customers who booked first but did not get their cars before December. Most of MG dealerships have gotten greedy and are following bad practices forcing customer to take inflated insurance and if customer is not agreeing then the deliveries were delayed. I feel MG should have continued free charging offer for first 30k customers to build customer trust and keep sales momentum.

JSW MG needs to be cautious and not get too carried by sales momentum and keep increasing Windsor prices every quarter. MG and Kia are the only 2 companies that have kept increasing prices of their cars every 3-4 months in 2024, even when other manufacturers were providing discounts.

MG ICE car sales have taken a hit due to price increases and some variants are no longer seen as VFM offerings. Windsor sales would take a hit once Creta EV and Mahindra BEV prices for all variants are out and if prices of Windsor get close to Creta EV and Mahindra BEVs.

Big relief to Tata Motors.

Some hike was expected but looks like MG is a bit too happy with ~3,000 units a month. Instead, MG should expand capacity and aspire for double this volume at 6-7,000 sales. After making an initial dent in Tata EV marketshare, Tata EV December sales were up 11% YoY.

Launch the 50kWh Windsor, fix the AC/ add full ventilated seats, and improve the suspension = undercut Curvv EV, Creta EV and eVitara for a long-range model. The Windsor EV can pull sales from petrol models if MG has the ambition. Else MG can stay happy with a 2-3% marketshare of total car sales and stay small in India. Perhaps, JSW never intended MG partnership to scale up too much, and are in talks with other Chinese EV makers... looks like JSW is unhappy with lack of clear majority control.

The new MG EV models announced recently are all expensive ones that will can help establish a brand image, but will not give them volumes. MG need a BYD Seagull type 10L EV, and a 60KWH 18L EV.

XEV.9E price is on the higher side. Yes, it is packed to the gills with equipment, but the pricing is a bit ambitious as the quality is in the third quartile and not top quartile. The Chinese are offering vehicles in the price range with top quartile interior quality. Plus, they do not provide the chargers free and these need to be purchased separately. I would have expected the range to top out around 27 lakhs. I can smell the deep discounts coming in the months ahead.

RTO reduced to 5% in Chhattisgarh

We have an auto expo scheduled for 15th Jan -15 Feb 2025 and the if one buys a car during the said period and gets her/his registration in Raipur (CG04), the road tax is straight away reduced to 5%, yes you read that right, it's flat 5%. I know some who reside in different states but are picking up cars here (X7, 130), with a rent agreement of course. States like Karnataka, Kerala should definitely take a cue. Last year we picked an RE Hunter 350, this year we are picking up a car, will update once it gets delivered

On the same lines, a trade fair is held in Gwalior (M.P.) every year for 2 months (Jan-Feb). The road tax is 5% for these months as against standard 10%, only for Gwalior RTO. Being a Gwalior native, I purchased Kushaq 1.5DSG Style last year in Feb, paid 96K as road tax (it was 3.7 lacs for Bangalore as per the quote I received from Bangalore Skoda dealer). As Gwalior doesn't have luxury brand showrooms (BMW, Merc, Audi), these companies build temporary showrooms spanning a minimum sq ft area set by Govt and sell loads of vehicles. Many people from neighboring districts and even states (UP, Rajasthan) come to buy bikes and cars during this time.

yes it is. been running the same way since last 12-15 years, or even more probably. just search ‘gwalior trade fair RTO’ in google and it will show up all relevant information. RTO even sets up a separate office within the fair premises only for these 2 months.

1. How much would we save using this for a honda elevate for example that costs around 14L ex showroom?
2. How much would it cost to get it transported to BLR?
3. Are we able to keep the MP number in BLR or need to get a new number here for which anyways would need to pay so much extra

  1. 5% out of 10% RTO charges which should mean ~70K.
  2. I guess around 20-25K but really depends on the services you use. I would usually not recommend the regular packers and movers as they can damage the vehicle.
  3. As per the law, you have up to 1 year to get the transfer done to a KA number and yes you will have to pay extra.
Overall, not worth any efforts if you want to be driving in KA.
