Re: Maruti Suzuki's new compact SUV teasers

Source: Maruti Suzuki Gypsy revival on cards

Though an year-old article, it gives some insight into the above discussion:

"We’re looking at how to strengthen our portfolio and are identifying new gaps. We’re actively looking at the small SUV space. This will have to be a four-door diesel model, as a petrol two-door SUV will not click with the Indian consumer. We’re working on an almost new concept for this.

The other cars that the company seems to be working on include
  1. new small-car in the Alto segment or a possible Alto replacement
  2. MPV possibly based on the RIII concept.
  3. the SX4 diesel variant
  4. new Swift
  5. Swift Dzire facelift
  6. And finally the Kizashi sedan
Until now, everything came except 1, 2 and 5!

I'm a little late to this thread so have some catching up to do...

I don't believe the Gypsy has been facelifted. The Jimny has been around and is the cheapest offroad capable 4x4 available in the Middle East. You won't see it on the roads much but it's available there nonetheless. BTW, the Gypsy is a derivative of the Jimny - the 1985 Gypsy (the model year that started the Gypsy line of vehicles) bears resemblance to the 1981 Jimny.

I have seen those pics on Maruti's FaceBook page mentioning that it would make it to the auto expo in January and from the look of the grille, I would say it is a Jimny.

BTW, the Suzuki Jimny has had the Wagon-R style look since 1998 (Wagon-R has those roof rails since its introduction in 1993).

I think it would be more like the Jimny displayed at a recent auto show in Tokyo (the pic is posted on a later page in this thread).

When I went to take the delivery of a Maruti Esteem Di in 2004, there were posters of the Maruti Swift put up... but we didn't see them available in India for another 4 years. On the flip-side, we don't have any posters of the Jimny at any Maruti showrooms yet...

When I see the scoop on the bonet or the flat headlights and grille of the Jimny (as well as the almost vertical windshield), I think of the wind resistance - but then again, SUVs aren't really meant for highway cruising, because that's cross-over territory. When I see the square headlights of the Maruti 800, I can only imagine how much air resistance they cause. A streamlined glass or plastic casing over the head lights would improve the aerodynamics but they would have to deal with the heat generated by the bulbs.

To me, the sketch seemed like an SX4 sedan (hard to tell because the rear does seem to have the boot in the sketch). The SX4 is sold as a hatchback internationally, so you may be correct in your observation.

I know; that was a sarcastic remark to say that the styling is a very half-hearted effort.

I have to agree with you on that. Even in the Middle East, the Jimny hasn't seen any change to its styling - it still has its distincting front grille. I did see a picture from the auto show in Tokyo that had a different front grille.

In terms of styling, the Grand Vitara looks just perfect but the price tag (mostly due to taxes as it is imported as a CBU) keeps it out of reach for most of us.

Guys, ignore the bonnet scoops & other modifications. Remember, at the last Auto Expo, Maruti has showcased customised one-off versions of its mainstream cars. These didn't make it to production and just served the eye-candy purpose.

Thats bang on.

Maruti is coming up with some modified versions of all its products and will call them Concepts .
Starting right from the most selling Alto to the least selling Kizashi, all will be modified to look their best.

Waiting to see how they get the new Swift modified.

Re: Maruti Suzuki's new compact SUV teasers

Slightly better teaser pics I received today in a mailer by Maruti. The pictures in the first post of this thread are of a sketch, these look like of the actual concept.

The red ones are of the Compact SUV, blue of the Ertiga MPV.

Attaching one more of a teaser pic of the Ertiga on MS' facebook page.

Re: Maruti Suzuki's new compact SUV teasers

I would only add a little more to this post.
The GV would have seen superb success had it been available in a Diesel alternative. Perhaps a 2 litre diesel or even a 1.6 /1.8 instead of that over used 1.3 which anyway would have been badly underpowered for the GV.
Had they done this and had they also been reasonable and at least assembled this vehicle in India, Im sure we would have seen many more on our roads. Even I would have certainly considered buying one. But alas, Maruti tends to continue in its "sarkari" behaviour.

Re: Maruti Suzuki's new compact SUV teasers

The rear of the SUV looks more Ford 'Kuga' ish. Would be brilliant if its priced in the range of 7 to 8 lakhs if its the size of a Jimmy. Otherwise there will be no takers for an SUV this size as you can get a base scorpio or a mid xylo for that price which IMO would make more value for money than a smalish SUV ( If it is Jimmy Size) that is

Re: Maruti Suzuki's new compact SUV teasers

Maruti has been giving some nice concepts lately.

1st the A-Star, then the RIII an now this Baby SUV.
Even Tata creates some great concept vehicles.
Why doesn't Mahindra ever come out with a concept.
