Read that VW inaugurated its used car business in Mumbai. It is providing 1 yr warranty on VW cars.
Should be a good place to look out for VW cars at least.

Volkswagen commences operations of its pre-owned car business - Das WeltAuto - in India.

Das WeltAuto has commenced its operations with 15 dealerships across the country. The brand plans to end the year with 21 dealerships.

Mr Arvind Saxena, Managing Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt. Ltd. said “We have stringent systems and processes that ensure every pre-owned car undergoes a 160 point checklist which is part of our standard protocol ensuring a hassle free driving experience

Das WeltAuto. dealerships will trade in car models from all manufacturers and will not be restricted to Volkswagen car lines.

Not sure how reliable they will be in the end. When they cannot rein in there dealers selling brand new cars and customers continue to feel ill-treated and cheated by the dealers, then I am not sure if the used car outlet will be any better. Also somehow I have always felt that claims like "160 point checklist" etc are generally marketing gimmicks which usually turn out to be false and are mostly only a handful of things. At the end of the day there is nothing like buying a used car from the individual seller himself eventually.

Lets see how this plays out.

I remember for the Vento launch they had sent a talking voice about the VW in the leading newspapers which was a talk of the town for sometime.

So this time is it going to be an old used voice talking about the VW group?

Google translate reveals that "Das Welt Auto" means "The World Car" in German. They should've gone with "Das Verwendete Auto" instead which is a direct description of the kind of cars they're selling. It means "The Used Car". But perhaps "Das Welt Auto" tries to signify that the car has already seen the world :D

Anyway, how safe are these manufacturer backed used car dealers ? I've heard lots of stories of totalled cars sold as scrap ending up at used car dealers (even manufacturer backed ones) looking like nothing happened to them from the outside and odo reading reset to ~50k from over ~100k (very common story to be heard of Mahindra first choice dealers).

What protection does Volkswagen give against such practices and what all does the 1-year warranty cover ?

Is the used car business so very profitable?? Why is every other major car manufacturer jumping into this business?

As if buying used vehicle itself is not enough, imagine buying it from VW!!! :Frustrati

The reason why all big OEMs are jumping into this sector is that the profit margins are quite high in used car market. Currently the used car market is ruled by the un-organized players (brokers and small time vendors).

Organized players like Mahindra, Maruti, Hyundai and now Volkswagen are trying to take over with their selling point being "TRUST" :thumbs up. Which I feel is a good point.

By providing warranty for used cars which are not of their brands Volkswagen has won my vote. What do you say?

Wonder if this initiative is meant to support their new car sales (offering a conduit to offload the cars traded-in while buying a new Audi / VW / Skoda) or, being built as an independent business in itself. Simply put, is this akin to a Maruti True Value / Honda Auto Terrace / Toyota U Trust, or, is it more on the lines of Mahindra First Choice / Carnation? Any thoughts?
